AI- Modernisation Engineer - Senior

Purpose:

Lead the technical modernization of legacy applications by identifying opportunities to leverage AI, reduce technical debt, and accelerate business value. The role provides technical leadership across application modernization, AI adoption and engineering practices while ensuring solutions are secure, scalable, and aligned with the organization's strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess legacy applications, platforms and technical debt to define modernisation priorities.
• Develop AI-enabled modernisation strategies and target-state solution approaches.
• Identify opportunities to automate, optimise or re-engineer business processes using AI technologies.
• Define application modernisation patterns, including retire, retain, rehost, replatform, refactor and rebuild.
• Provide technical leadership to engineering teams throughout the delivery lifecycle.
• Collaborate with business, architecture, security and data teams to ensure solutions meet business and technical requirements.
• Establish AI engineering standards, governance and best practices.
• Ensure AI solutions are secure, scalable, maintainable and compliant with organisational policies.
• Evaluate emerging AI technologies and recommend their adoption where appropriate.
• Support programme governance by providing technical assurance, risk assessments and executive updates.

Skills & Experience

• Strong understanding of enterprise AI platforms, including Azure AI Foundry, Azure OpenAI Service, AWS Bedrock, Amazon Q, Google Vertex AI, Microsoft Copilot Studio, and OpenAI APIs.
• Experience with AI-assisted software engineering using tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, Windsurf or similar AI development environments.
• Knowledge of LLM architectures, prompt engineering, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), AI agents, Model Context Protocol (MCP), embeddings and vector databases.
• Experience integrating AI capabilities into enterprise applications using APIs, microservices and event-driven architectures.
• Familiarity with modern application development practices including DevSecOps, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code and cloud-native architectures.
• Understanding of AI governance, security, privacy and responsible AI principles, including model risk, data protection and regulatory considerations.
• Experience evaluating and selecting AI technologies based on business value, scalability, cost and operational risk.

Nice to Have

• Experience with LangChain, Semantic Kernel, LlamaIndex or AutoGen.
• Knowledge of orchestration platforms such as n8n, Microsoft Power Automate, Azure Logic Apps or Apache Airflow.
• Experience with AI observability, evaluation frameworks and model lifecycle management.
• Understanding of AI-assisted legacy code analysis, automated refactoring and code modernisation techniques.
