About the Role
As an AI/ML Engineering Intern, you'll work alongside experienced engineers to help build the AI infrastructure powering BTG applications.
You'll contribute to modern AI applications using Large Language Models (LLMs), AI agents, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), vector search, and the Model Context Protocol (MCP) while learning how production-scale AI systems are designed and deployed.
A major focus of this role is developing intelligent merchant knowledge systems that normalize, enrich, organize, and retrieve business information while securely connecting AI models to external APIs and commerce platforms.
What You'll Do
- Build AI-powered applications using modern LLMs.
- Develop AI agents and Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations.
- Build Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines using embeddings and vector databases.
- Design merchant data ingestion, normalization, enrichment, and intelligent retrieval systems.
- Integrate AI applications with internal services and third-party APIs.
- Build structured outputs, tool-calling workflows, and agent orchestration systems.
- Evaluate, test, and improve AI application performance.
- Participate in architecture discussions, code reviews, and Agile/Scrum development.
- Learn modern AI engineering practices from experienced engineers.
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a Master's degree program in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or graduated within the past six months.
- Demonstrated AI engineering experience through graduate coursework, research, internships, open-source contributions, or substantial personal projects.
- Strong Python programming skills.
- Experience building applications using Large Language Models (LLMs).
- Hands-on experience building AI agents, Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations, or equivalent agent orchestration frameworks.
- Experience with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), embeddings, semantic search, and vector databases.
- Experience integrating REST APIs or third-party APIs into applications.
- Experience working with structured and unstructured data, including normalization, enrichment, transformation, and schema mapping.
- Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently within a remote environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Amazon Bedrock, OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Gemini, or similar LLM platforms.
- Experience with LangGraph, OpenAI Agents SDK, CrewAI, AutoGen, or similar AI agent frameworks.
- Experience designing Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers or custom MCP tools.
- Experience building data ingestion, normalization, enrichment, ETL, or knowledge graph pipelines.
- Experience with MongoDB Atlas Vector Search, Pinecone, Weaviate, Qdrant, Chroma, or similar vector databases.
- Experience integrating AI with REST APIs, GraphQL APIs, or external platforms.
- Experience with AWS cloud services and AI infrastructure.
- Familiarity with MLOps, model deployment, evaluation, and observability.
- Startup, research, or open-source experience is a plus.
