About the Role
We are seeking a Backend Engineering Intern to work alongside our engineering team while supporting the development of backend systems powering our platform.
Throughout this internship, you'll collaborate with experienced software engineers, participate in technical discussions, contribute to supervised engineering projects, and gain practical experience designing scalable APIs, backend services, distributed systems, and cloud-native applications.
This internship is designed to complement graduate-level coursework by providing structured mentorship and hands-on exposure to modern backend engineering practices in a collaborative startup environment.
What You'll Do
- Assist in designing, developing, and maintaining backend services and RESTful APIs.
- Contribute to backend development using Node.js, TypeScript, and NestJS under the guidance of experienced engineers.
- Participate in the development of scalable backend architectures and microservices.
- Assist with authentication and authorization implementations.
- Support database design, optimization, and backend data modeling.
- Contribute to payment-related development and integrations, including Stripe.
- Assist with asynchronous processing using queues, background workers, and messaging systems.
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code.
- Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, engineering discussions, and Agile/Scrum ceremonies.
- Learn modern software engineering practices used to build scalable backend platforms.
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a Master's degree program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical field, or graduated with a Master's degree within the past six months.
- Demonstrated backend development experience through graduate coursework, research, internships, open-source contributions, or substantial personal projects.
- Experience using Node.js and JavaScript/TypeScript.
- Familiarity with building RESTful APIs.
- Experience working with PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, or similar databases.
- Familiarity with AWS or Google Cloud Platform.
- Understanding of authentication and authorization concepts.
- Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
- Strong engineering fundamentals and a desire to continuously learn and improve.
Preferred Qualifications
- Academic or project experience involving payment systems or financial applications.
- Familiarity with Docker and CI/CD concepts.
- Exposure to event-driven architectures and messaging systems.
- Interest in fintech, commerce, distributed systems, or cloud infrastructure.
- Previous internship, research, or startup experience.
- Familiarity with AI-powered applications or backend systems supporting machine learning workloads.
