Job Title: Senior Architectural Designer / Project Architect Job Description A New York City–based architectural practice is seeking a Senior Architectural Designer or Project Architect to support multiple active residential and institutional projects. You will work directly with the firm’s owner and lead project architects to advance work from Design Development through final Construction Documents, ensuring design intent, technical accuracy, and coordination across several project types including affordable multifamily housing, institutional renovations, and ground-up residential developments. Responsibilities Produce comprehensive architectural construction documents for a range of residential and institutional projects. Advance projects from Design Development through final Construction Documents while maintaining design intent and technical accuracy. Develop detailed interior and exterior architectural elements, including building envelopes, interior fit-outs, and key junctions. Coordinate architectural drawings and documentation with consultants, including structural, MEP, and other design partners. Update and maintain Revit and AutoCAD models and drawing sets to reflect design changes and coordination feedback. Support the preparation and completion of permit and bid documentation, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards. Assist with finish selections and FF&E documentation, contributing to cohesive and well-detailed interior environments. Collaborate closely with firm leadership, including the owner and lead architects, to meet project milestones and deliverables. Contribute creatively and technically to design refinement across affordable multifamily housing, institutional renovations, aging-in-place townhouse projects, and ground-up luxury condominium developments. Manage portions of projects independently with minimal direction, ensuring quality, timeliness, and clear communication with the project team. Essential Skills Strong background in residential architecture, including single-family and multifamily projects. Experience working on ground-up construction projects, from early design through construction documentation. Multifamily housing experience, particularly on projects of varying scales, is preferred. Solid understanding of construction sequencing and building systems, including how design decisions impact constructability. Proficiency with Revit for building information modeling and production of coordinated drawing sets. Proficiency with AutoCAD for drafting, documentation, and coordination. Demonstrated experience completing permit and bid sets for residential and institutional projects. Experience coordinating with consultants and integrating their information into architectural documentation. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to collaborate effectively with leadership, consultants, and team members. Ability to work independently with minimal direction while maintaining high standards of quality and accuracy. Prior experience working on projects ranging from approximately 4,000 to 125,000 square feet is preferred. Desired experience level of approximately 8–15+ years in architecture, with a focus on design development and construction documentation. Experience with design phases including Schematic Design, Design Development, and Construction Documents. Experience with interior fit-out and exterior detailing for renovation and ground-up projects. Experience with FF&E documentation and coordination. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working on affordable multifamily housing developments is advantageous. background in institutional or community-oriented projects, such as church or similar renovations, is beneficial. Experience with aging-in-place residential renovations and additions is a plus. Familiarity with ground-up luxury condominium developments or comparable high-end residential projects is helpful. Comfort working in a small, collaborative studio environment with direct exposure to firm leadership. Ability to manage multiple active projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines. Interest in contributing both creatively and technically to a variety of project types and scales. Motivation to take on a role more Senior than mid-level (5–6 year) staff and to provide leadership by example through quality work. Work Environment The role is based in an architectural office environment located in New York City. The practice offers a hybrid work model, with a preferred schedule of approximately four days onsite and one day remote after onboarding. You will work closely with the firm’s owner and a small design team in a collaborative studio atmosphere that encourages both creative and technical contribution. The environment provides exposure to several active projects simultaneously across residential, multifamily, institutional, renovation, and ground-up construction markets, offering immediate impact on high-priority assignments and the potential for assignment extension based on project workload. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of New York, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $53.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
