Assistant Chief Engineer – Structural Engineering (Structures and Hull & Outfit) – Dreadnought
The Engineering Function and Dreadnought Programme within Maritime Submarines is keen to present this progression opportunity for an established and professionally recognised engineer with Chartered status, to take on the role of Assistant Chief Engineer (ACE) for the Structural Engineering discipline.
The Hull and Outfit Assistant Chief Engineer within the Office of the Chief Engineer (OCE) act as the Technical Authority (delegated through the Product Technical Authority in accordance with TM 047) for the Platform and Hull and Outfit Major Systems, as well as acting on behalf of the Whole Boat Technical Authority from a whole boat integrated product perspective.
This role will provide you with the opportunity to develop your career within BAE Systems due to exposure gained across multiple business areas.
Your main responsibilities as ACE (Structural Eng) Hull & Outfit will involve:
· Working closely with relevant Engineering Delivery Managers and their teams to ensure the engineered design solution being delivered will satisfy all requirements.
· Work in partnership with their ESO opposite within the Joint Design Authority (JDA) to provide clear guidance and support, to engineering delivery teams as they look to discharge their responsibilities.
· Lead and Chair review activities in support of the Dreadnought Development and Integration Review (D&IR), and associated feeder reviews (System Level Reviews, Major System Level Reviews and Whole Boat Integration Reviews); used to close out and certify the final (Issue 1) design.
· Co-ordination of "Technical" feeds into Phase Reviews (eg: conduct of Technical Bid Reviews, etc.) as required.
· Support the identification and review of risks and opportunities at all levels – i.e. at a system level, a functional capability level, whole boat level, or key programme level.
· Lead the assessment and management of complex inter-domain or inter-function issues identified during the close out of the final design, through change or through build/commissioning.
· Ensure Technical Authority is delegated as required to appropriate SQEP personnel within the Delivery Team(s) to support their role.
· Ensure capability developed within the Dreadnought project is re-used and exploited on future platforms in accordance with the BAE Systems Submarines Capability Roadmap.
· Undertake Certification planning and execution to produce Interim Certificates of Design (NCoDs) and the Final Certificate of Design at points aligned to the Design Review programme.
· Provide assurance and governance activities and oversight of the Delivery organisation in order to assure a fit for purpose design that meets requirements and complies with relevant legislation in accordance with TM 133. This will include acting as the Design Review Chair in LCM design reviews and also as the Design Review Assessor where appropriate.
Your skills and qualifications:
· Degree-level education or equivalent accrued experience in relevant Engineering discipline.
· Professionally recognised and Chartered status is essential.
· Familiar with Structural Design standards and calculations.
· Knowledge of Platform Structure (Pressure Hull, Bulkheads, Tanks etc).
· Knowledge of Structural Manufacturing processes (advantages/disadvantages) and Non-Destructive Examination Techniques.
· Knowledge of Coating Systems and application standards.
· Knowledge of Installation and Tiling Systems.
