Job Title: Assistant Construction Project Manager Renewable Energy / BESS

Job Description

The Assistant Construction Project Manager supports the onsite execution and coordination of utility-scale renewable energy projects, with a strong focus on solar and battery energy storage systems (BESS). This traveling, site-based role bridges project planning and field operations by coordinating day-to-day construction activities, monitoring project progress, managing documentation, and facilitating communication among project managers, construction managers, field teams, subcontractors, and stakeholders. The Assistant Construction Project Manager helps ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with established quality and contractual requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Project Manager and Construction Manager in coordinating day-to-day construction activities to ensure work is performed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in line with quality standards.
  • Assist with EPC project delivery across the full lifecycle, including engineering coordination, procurement and material tracking, construction activities, commissioning, and project turnover/handover.
  • Monitor and track project schedules, budgets, forecasts, billings, and job-cost reports, and support accurate and timely project controls reporting.
  • Coordinate with preconstruction, procurement teams, vendors, and subcontractors to support material and equipment deliveries, subcontractor performance, and contract requirements.
  • Review project-related invoices, payroll, certified payroll reports, and job-cost expenses for accuracy and proper coding, and escalate discrepancies or potential cost issues to project leadership.
  • Prepare, document, and track RFIs and change orders, ensuring appropriate approvals are obtained and that impacts to schedule, cost, and scope are clearly documented.
  • Maintain and organize project documentation, including submittals, contract clarifications, project requirements, as-built drawings, meeting minutes, and progress reports.
  • Support onsite project teams by communicating project priorities, schedules, work assignments, and deliverables, and help ensure necessary materials, equipment, and resources are available to field personnel.
  • Coordinate onsite administrative requirements, including payroll, certified payroll reporting, and other labor reporting obligations, in accordance with prevailing wage and regulatory requirements.
  • Identify, track, and escalate potential project risks, delays, scope changes, and cost impacts, and support mitigation efforts in collaboration with project leadership.
  • Maintain effective communication with clients, subcontractors, vendors, and project stakeholders, providing updates on field conditions, schedule impacts, and outstanding issues.
  • Participate in project kickoff meetings, progress meetings, and coordination meetings, document action items, and follow up on commitments to support project execution.
  • Support project safety requirements and established safety practices, promoting a culture of safety on site and ensuring adherence to applicable safety and environmental regulations.
  • Assist with contract administration tasks related to RFIs, change orders, clarifications, and compliance with contractual obligations.
  • Track subcontractor performance, including schedule adherence, quality of work, and responsiveness, and communicate performance concerns to project leadership.
  • Contribute to progress reporting by compiling field updates, documenting work completed, and supporting accurate status reporting to stakeholders.
  • Help identify schedule and cost impacts arising from changes, delays, or field conditions and support the development of corrective action plans.
  • Work closely with field engineers, project engineers, and site supervisors to ensure alignment between project plans and day-to-day field execution.

Essential Skills

  • 36 years of project management or construction experience within renewable energy, EPC contracting, or industrial construction, preferably on large-scale or utility-scale projects.
  • Field and site-based construction experience, with a strong understanding of day-to-day field execution and subcontractor coordination.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting large-scale construction projects, including coordination of subcontractors, vendors, procurement, and field teams.
  • Solid understanding of EPC project delivery, including engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and project turnover/handover.
  • Experience with project controls, including schedule tracking, budget and cost tracking, forecasting, billings, and job-cost reporting.
  • Hands-on experience managing RFIs, change orders, submittals, project documentation, as-built drawings, and progress reporting.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to maintain clear and professional interactions with project managers, field teams, clients, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Excellent organization and documentation skills, with attention to detail in managing project records, financial information, and contract-related documents.
  • Effective problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to identify and escalate schedule, cost, quality, or compliance concerns.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced construction environment while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently and work onsite at project locations as part of a site-based role.
  • Comfort working in a field-focused environment and collaborating closely with construction managers and field personnel.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience in utility-scale solar and/or battery energy storage systems (BESS) strongly preferred.
