About the position:
The Assistant Controller is a key leader within the Finance function, responsible for the integrity, timeliness, and effectiveness of day-to-day accounting operations and financial reporting of Americares. This role owns the monthly and yearly close process, preparation of GAAP-compliant financial statements, Form 990 preparation, audit readiness, and internal control strength. The Assistant Controller manages the General Ledger Accounting team, drives process improvements, and builds accounting capabilities through structured staff training and coaching. The ideal candidate brings strong not-for-profit accounting expertise, leadership acumen, and a continuous improvement mindset.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage and develop Accounting staff, ensuring success in meeting objectives while supporting their professional growth and development.
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, revenue accounting, fixed assets, payroll accounting, cash management, and expense reporting.
  • Own and lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring timely, accurate, and high-quality financial reporting.
  • Prepare GAAP-compliant financial statements and support budgeting, forecasting, and management reporting activities.
  • Lead Form 990 preparation, support regulatory compliance activities, and coordinate annual audits and auditor requests.
  • Assess, improve, and document accounting processes, internal controls, policies, and procedures to increase efficiency and strengthen compliance.
  • Actively model and contribute to Americares values, work culture, and mission, while partnering effectively across departments.

Key expectations for this role include:

In the first 90 days:

  • Learn and embody the Americares values.
  • Complete all required onboarding and training programs.
  • Gain a thorough understanding of Accounting department processes, procedures, and systems.
  • Develop familiarity with annual Form 990, financial statement, and Uniform Guidance audit requirements.
  • Assume ownership of day-to-day accounting functions and direct report management.
  • Take ownership of the month-end close process.

In the first 6 months:

  • Begin leading financial statement and Form 990 preparation with minimal supervision.
  • Evaluate current accounting processes and procedures and identify efficiency opportunities.
  • Build and support an effective cross-training program for the Accounting department.
    Initiate process improvements and maintain supporting documentation.
  • Become fully trained to serve as backup for the AP Manager.

In the first year:

  • Assume full ownership of the year-end close process.
  • Lead preparation of financial statements, Uniform Guidance schedules, and Form 990 filings.
  • Coordinate interim and year-end audits and other regulatory filings, including 1099 reporting.
  • Become fully trained to serve as backup to the Controller.

Degrees and/or experience required for the role:

  • Valid Certified Professional Accountant license

Competencies required for the role include:

  • Demonstrated inclusive leadership skills with the ability to motivate, coach, and develop accounting teams in a nonprofit environment.
  • Strong command of U.S. GAAP for nonprofits (ASC 958), contribution and grant accounting, and familiarity with Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200).
  • Experience in preparing and supporting financial statements and Form 990 filings.
  • Extensive experience utilizing nonprofit accounting and CRM systems.
  • Audit coordination experience, including preparation of schedules and auditor communication
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Strong relationship-building skills, emotional intelligence, and ability to collaborate effectively across functions.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing account reconciliations and flux analyses.
  • Process-oriented mindset with a focus on continuous improvement and practical problem solving.
  • Strong analytical skills, exceptional attention to detail, and commitment to data integrity and deadlines.
  • High integrity, discretion, and alignment with organizational mission and values.

These competencies are preferred but not required for the role:

  • Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Accounting/CRM system implementation experience
  • Fluency in languages spoken in one or more Americares core locations, including India, Philippines, Tanzania, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, and Colombia, in addition to English.
