We are looking for an Assistant Curator, Education who is creative, collaborative and a critical thinker to work in the Education Team alongside the Education Curator. The Assistant Curator, Education will develop and deliver a range of artists’ residencies, commissions, workshops, events and resources that support Serpentine’s aim to connect artists and audiences by bringing art into the every day. The role requires experience of and enthusiasm for working with children, young people and families, particularly through co-production processes, an understanding of contemporary art practice, as well as proficiency with administrative and organisational tasks. The Assistant Curator is part of the wider Programmes Team, which works together to ensure the smooth running of the Galleries as well as to promote the Serpentine as one of the leading modern and contemporary galleries internationally. Three years’ relevant experience of working with children or young people aged under 18 in a cultural, education or community based setting Understanding of innovation in and research surrounding co-production processes. Experience of developing co-production processes. Strong knowledge of modern and contemporary art, including social practice. An empathetic understanding of the pressures facing children, young people and educators living in London. Interest in anti-racist, anti-ableist and trauma-informed practice. Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills. Strong organisational skills, with the ability to work flexibly and cooperatively. Availability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends as required. Desirable: Experience developing publications and resources for children, young people or educators. Experience of working with anti-racist, anti-ableist and/or trauma informed practice. An interest in embodied creative practices. Main Duties: Deliver on-site, in-school and community-based creative workshops and artist commissions with a range of people, alongside the Education Curator and commissioned artists. Deliver initiatives that support audience development and widen access to the Gallery. Develop and support co-creation processes with artists, children, families and young people. Maintain positive working relationships with all stakeholders, including children, families and young people, parents and carers, educator, university and community partners. Book internal and external venues, source and secure materials and equipment and set up workshop spaces. Support the co-production of publications, toolkits, resources and activity packs with and for children, families, young people and educators. Provide research support on artists, schools and community issues as required. Support with pastoral care and hospitality for projects and workshops. Ensure that the Serpentine Galleries Health and Safety Policy and Safeguarding Policy is adhered to at all times, including writing risk assessments for programmes. Keep up to date with best practice in arts education and social practice through training and research. Administrative Support: Maintain an accurate database of Education figures per programme. Support evaluation processes with educators, children, families and young people and produce analysis. Support the production of internal and external reports, supplying figures and drafting content. Develop and maintain schedules and diaries for the programme. Assist the Education Curator with proof-reading texts and liaising with freelance editors, copy-editors and designers where appropriate. Communication Support: Maintain and develop the Serpentine Galleries database of Education stakeholders. Develop programme copy for a range of different audiences and purposes. Coordinate the publication of relevant content on the Serpentine Galleries website and social media with the Audiences team. Financial Support: Maintain accurate and up-to-date programme budgets and coordinate receipt and payment of invoices for all Education artists and freelance contractors. Maintain departmental petty cash and credit card expenses. General duties: Be a champion for Arts Council England’s Inclusivity and Relevance Investment Principle to ensure best practice through a proactive approach to equality, diversity and inclusion. Follow and assist in the implementation of all Serpentine’s policies including Dignity at Work and Health and Safety policies. Any other activities as are necessary for the operation of the Programmes Team and its strategic objectives. This job description is a guide to the nature of the work required of the Assistant Curator, Education and does not form part of the contract of employment. It is neither wholly comprehensive nor restrictive and does not preclude change or development which may be required in the future. Salary: The salary is £19,282 (pro-rated to the full-time equivalent of £32,136 per annum). Hours: This contract is for three days per week. Please note that Wednesday and Thursday are core days for this role. Our normal office working hours are 10am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, although the jobholder will be expected, within reason, to work such hours outside these periods as are necessary for the proper fulfilment of the role. We operate a hybrid working model, with employees attending the office 3 days per week with the option to work from home 2 days per week. Duration of Appointment: This is a permanent appointment, subject to a 3-month probationary period. Annual Leave: The annual leave entitlement is pro-rated to the full-time equivalent of 25 days per annum rising to 30 days after 5 years’ service. In addition, staff receive a pro-rated entitlement to the 8 Bank Holidays per annum. Pension: Participation in Serpentine’s auto-enrolment pension scheme. You can opt out if you wish.
