GEICO is seeking an Associate Counsel to join our Staff Counsel team in Fairfax, VA. This is an opportunity for an attorney with litigation experience to take an active role defending lawsuits in Virginia courts and handling first-party insurance defense matters.
In this role, you'll manage cases through the litigation process, develop legal strategy, take and defend depositions, handle motions and discovery, and represent GEICO in hearings and trials. You'll work closely with Claims partners while building valuable courtroom and litigation experience.
What You’ll Do
As Associate Counsel, you will:
- Manage and defend assigned litigation matters from inception through resolution, including trial or dispositive hearing, as applicable.
- Develop case strategy and provide legal analysis regarding liability, damages, and case value.
- Draft pleadings, motions, discovery responses, briefs, legal opinions, and memoranda.
- Conduct and defend depositions, examinations under oath, and other pretrial proceedings.
- Research applicable laws, regulations, and legal issues to support case strategy.
- Partner with the Claims Department to provide practical legal counsel and recommendations.
- Represent GEICO in trials, hearings, conferences, and other proceedings as required.
- Maintain clear, concise, and professional case documentation and communications.
What You’ll Need
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
- Admission to the Virginia Bar and active license in good standing.
- 2–6+ years of relevant litigation experience, including experience in insurance defense, civil litigation, and/or personal injury matters.
- Ability to maintain all applicable licensing and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements.
- Strong legal research, writing, analysis, and advocacy skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple matters and competing priorities.
- Ability to analyze complex legal and procedural information and apply it effectively.
- Professional written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to travel as required for trials, hearings, depositions, meetings, and conferences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Civil litigation experience.
- Insurance defense litigation experience.
- Experience independently handling matters through key stages of the litigation lifecycle.

Annual Salary
$118,900.00 - $186,550.00The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
