Associate Director Data Engineer

General Description:

The Associate Director, Data Engineering will provide technical leadership for enterprise data engineering initiatives across BeOne Medicines. Reporting to the [Director, Data Engineering], this role will lead the architecture and delivery of scalable data platforms and lakehouse solutions and establish engineering standards and best practices across the organization.

This is a hands-on leadership role. The Associate Director will stay directly involved in architecture, design, and critical development work.

The Associate Director will partner closely with business, analytics, architecture, and technology teams across global regions to translate enterprise needs into scalable, compliant data solutions.

Essential Functions of the Job:

• Lead the design and evolution of enterprise data platforms, lakehouse architecture, and reusable data services, staying hands-on in design, prototyping, code review, and critical development work.
• Provide architectural oversight across the full data lifecycle, from ingestion and integration through curated data products and analytics consumption.
• Define and promote data engineering standards, architecture patterns, and development practices, and establish technical review mechanisms for major initiatives.
• Simplify architecture, improve data quality and reliability, increase reuse, and reduce technical debt.
• Drive modernization of engineering capabilities, including automation, metadata management, and AI-assisted engineering practices.
• Partner with business and technology leaders to translate enterprise priorities into data architecture and engineering solutions.
• Partner with engineering leadership on technology strategy, roadmap, resource planning, and prioritization.
• Lead complex initiatives spanning multiple systems, data sources, teams, and geographic regions.
• Communicate complex technical topics clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior leadership.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

• Mentor Senior and Staff Data Engineers and raise engineering capability across the organization.

Computer Skills: Current hands-on proficiency with Databricks, Spark, Python, SQL, and [AWS/Azure], with a track record of contributing directly to design and code while in a leadership role.

Other Qualifications:

• 12+ years of experience in data engineering, data architecture, or software engineering, including significant experience leading enterprise-scale data platform, data warehouse, or lakehouse initiatives.
• 5+ years of people management experience leading data or software engineering teams.
• Strong understanding of modern data architecture, data modeling, data integration, and large-scale data processing.
• Demonstrated experience defining architecture standards and engineering best practices.
• Proven ability to influence without direct authority and drive alignment among stakeholders with different priorities.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred:

• Experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or another highly regulated industry, including GxP and 21 CFR Part 11 environments.
• Familiarity with clinical data and standards such as CDISC (SDTM/ADaM).
• Experience with data governance, metadata management, data quality, and lineage.
• Experience applying AI and AI-assisted capabilities to data engineering and platform development.
• Experience working with globally distributed engineering and business teams.

Travel: Occasional domestic and international travel.

Education Required:

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Salary Range: $158,400.00 - $208,400.00 annually

Actual compensation packages are determined by several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to job-related skills, depth of experience, certifications, relevant education or training, and specific work location. Packages may vary by location due to differences in the cost of labor. The recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for a preferred location during the hiring process. Please note that the listed range reflects the base salary or hourly range only. Non-Commercial roles are eligible to participate in the annual bonus plan, and Commercial roles are eligible to participate in an incentive compensation plan.
