About SoLo Funds

SoLo Funds is an AI-powered community banking platform, enabling financial autonomy for underserved communities. Launched in 2018 as an on-demand marketplace, SoLo allows its members to request and fund emergency loans—without predatory interest rates. We are VC-backed, supported by Techstars and have strategic partnerships with Visa and Kiva.

About the Role

We are seeking an Associate General Counsel & Director of Compliance to help guide SoLo’s growth and lead the ongoing development and operation of our compliance program.

Reporting to the General Counsel, you will serve as a legal adviser to the business while taking ownership of day-to-day compliance execution. You will help teams navigate legal and regulatory requirements, draft and negotiate agreements, advise on products and member experiences, and translate legal requirements into practical policies, controls, and processes.

This is a hands-on role for an attorney who combines sound legal judgment with the ability to build and operate an effective compliance program. You will work closely with Product, Engineering, Operations, Finance, Data, Marketing, and external partners to support responsible innovation and identify, assess, and address risk.

An active California Bar license and/or Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM) certification is preferred but not required. Candidates must meet the attorney qualification requirements below.

What You’ll Do

Legal Advice and Business Support

  • Advise the General Counsel and business teams on legal and regulatory issues affecting consumer lending, payments, bank partnerships, and new products.

  • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements, including vendor, technology, service provider, and strategic partnership agreements.

  • Prepare and update member-facing agreements, payment authorizations, disclosures, terms of service, and privacy notices.

  • Partner with Product and Engineering throughout product development to identify legal requirements and incorporate them into product design and implementation.

  • Review marketing materials, product claims, and member communications for legal and regulatory compliance.

  • Support the General Counsel on regulatory inquiries, examinations, investigations, disputes, and litigation, including coordinating with outside counsel.

  • Assist with corporate governance, financing and transaction diligence, and other legal matters as business needs require.

Compliance Program Leadership

  • Design, implement, maintain, and improve SoLo’s company-wide compliance management system, including policies, procedures, risk assessments, monitoring, training, issue management, and reporting.

  • Oversee compliance activities relating to consumer protection, lending, payments, privacy, AML/KYC, sanctions, and fraud prevention, in coordination with relevant teams and partners.

  • Translate applicable requirements into clear operational procedures, controls, and accountable business practices.

  • Manage compliance monitoring and testing, track findings, and work with business owners to complete and validate remediation.

  • Oversee consumer complaint compliance, including escalation, trend analysis, root-cause identification, and corrective action.

  • Support applicable licensing activities, regulatory filings, renewals, and ongoing reporting obligations.

  • Lead compliance due diligence and ongoing oversight of vendors and service providers, and coordinate compliance requirements with bank and payment partners.

  • Coordinate regulatory examinations, partner reviews, and compliance-related audits; prepare responses and track resulting commitments.

  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments and guide implementation of necessary changes.

  • Develop and deliver employee compliance training.

  • Prepare reporting for the General Counsel, management committees, and Board of Directors on compliance performance, material risks, and remediation progress.

  • Maintain organized compliance records and support partner and investor diligence.

What You Bring

  • A J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing in at least one U.S. state bar, with eligibility to practice in the role’s location, including through applicable in-house counsel registration.

  • At least five years of relevant legal and compliance experience. Knowledge of corporate laws, transactions, governance, is a plus.

  • Demonstrated experience building, managing, or materially improving an operational compliance program.

  • Strong knowledge of consumer financial protection requirements, including TILA/Regulation Z, EFTA/Regulation E, UDAAP, ECOA/Regulation B, FCRA, and applicable state lending and servicing requirements.

  • Familiarity with BSA/AML, KYC, OFAC sanctions, GLBA/Regulation P, state privacy laws, electronic contracting, and ACH and card payment requirements.

  • Experience drafting and negotiating contracts and preparing consumer agreements and disclosures.

  • Experience working with regulators, bank partners, auditors, or other external oversight stakeholders.

  • The ability to explain complex requirements clearly and recommend practical approaches that account for legal risk, business objectives, and member experience.

  • Strong writing, judgment, project management, and relationship-building skills.

  • A willingness to work directly on implementation, follow through on remediation, and manage competing priorities in a growing company.

Additional Experience We Value

  • Legal/Compliance experience at a fintech company or other regulated financial services business.

  • Experience with community lending, small-dollar lending, bank partnership programs, or digital financial products.

  • Experience with state licensing, regulatory examinations, or enforcement matters.
