About Us Wadhwani AI is a non-profit institute building and deploying applied AI solutions to solve critical issues in public health, agriculture, education, and urban development in underserved communities in the global south. We collaborate with governments, social sector organizations, academic and research institutions, and domain experts to identify real-world problems, and develop practical AI solutions to tackle these issues with the aim of making a substantial positive impact. We have over 30+ AI projects supported by leading philanthropies such as Gates Foundation, Google.org and Walmart. With a team of over 200 professionals, our expertise encompasses AI/ML research and innovation, software engineering, domain knowledge, design and user research. Job Description This is a remote position. We are looking for an Associate Machine Learning Scientist with a strong foundation in machine learning and a passion for applying AI and ML to solve high-impact societal challenges. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with machine learning and deep learning through academic, research, or project work, and a strong interest in applying these techniques to real-world problems. They should be comfortable working with data, developing and evaluating models, and translating real-world challenges into practical AI solutions. Strong software engineering skills, excellent communication, and the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams are essential. As an Associate Machine Learning Scientist, you will build machine learning solutions to problems of societal importance under the guidance of senior ML scientists. To apply machine learning for social good, you will need to understand user challenges and their context, curate and transform data, train and validate models, define appropriate evaluations, run experiments and simulations, and derive insights from data. You will work in cross-functional teams spanning engineering, solutions, and domain experts to develop solutions that are both technically robust and relevant to real-world needs. You will also interact with social sector organisations and stakeholders to understand challenges and contribute to the successful deployment of AI solutions. You will be encouraged to build breadth across different machine learning techniques and application areas, while developing deeper expertise in areas aligned with the problems you work on. Depending on the project, this may include applications involving language, speech, computer vision, tabular data, or time-series data. Excellence as an individual contributor goes together with strong collaboration, curiosity, and a willingness to continuously learn while contributing ideas, techniques, and knowledge to the team. Requirements Bachelor's or Master's degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Economics, or another relevant quantitative discipline, with 0–2 years of work or research experience. Strong foundation in machine learning and deep learning, including familiarity with common model architectures such as CNNs, RNNs, and Transformers. Solid software engineering skills in one or more programming languages, such as Python. Hands-on experience with machine learning through academic projects, research, internships, or other applied work. Experience working with data, including data preparation, analysis, visualization, and experimentation. Experience implementing, training, and evaluating machine learning or deep learning models. Track record of project work in applied machine learning. Experience applying AI models to concrete, real-world problems is a plus. Candidates may have experience across a range of application areas, including computer vision, natural language processing, speech, tabular data, and time-series modelling. Depth in one or more of these areas is valuable, while breadth across multiple areas is an advantage. Familiarity with modern deep learning models, frameworks, and libraries relevant to these application areas is desirable. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams. Passion for applying AI and machine learning to solve large-scale societal challenges.
