Athena Developer & Integration Analyst
About Matter Health
Matter Health delivers primary and preventive healthcare directly to older adults living in public housing communities.
Our mission is simple: to improve healthcare access by meeting patients where they are and building trusted relationships within the communities we serve. We are rapidly expanding and are seeking mission-driven professionals who thrive in fast-paced, people-centered environments.
We Lead with Love in Everything We Do.
About the Role
Matter Health is seeking a hands-on, technically skilled Athena Developer & Integration Analyst to join our Information Technology team. This individual contributor role will own the development, extension, and integration of our EHR ecosystem, serving as the organization's go-to technical resource on the athenaOne API suite, custom endpoint development, and platform-level configuration.
Our value-based care model depends on a deeply extended, tightly integrated athenaOne platform to support our field-based clinical teams. You will build against athenahealth's 800+ endpoint API surface, architect integrations, and extend what athenaOne can do for our care teams—while also evaluating and introducing AI and agentic tooling that can reduce documentation burden and surface clinical insight for the people doing the work.
This is primarily a software engineering role: writing code against athenahealth's APIs, designing integrations, and extending platform capabilities. Platform administration and configuration are a critical but secondary function, providing senior-level expertise in support of existing administrative capability. This position reports to the Chief Technology Officer. This is a fully remote role with up to 10% travel for occasional in-person meetings or team offsites.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain custom integrations and extensions on the athenaOne platform using athenahealth's REST and FHIR APIs across Clinicals, Collector, Communicator, and Population Health endpoints
Own the full API development lifecycle for athenaOne integrations, including sandbox testing, OAuth 2.0 authentication and token management, endpoint evaluation, versioning, and production rollout
Evaluate and prototype AI and agentic tooling within the athenahealth ecosystem—including Marketplace AI-powered solutions and LLM-based workflow automation—to reduce documentation burden and surface clinical insight for field-based care teams
Monitor athenahealth API changelogs and release notes, evaluate new endpoints and capabilities as they are released, and manage regression testing and rollout of platform and integration updates
Work directly with athenahealth's developer support and partner teams to resolve API issues, request custom endpoints, and pilot new AI-enabled capabilities
Design, build, and maintain bidirectional integrations between athenaClinicals and Salesforce, including the middleware, webhooks, and custom API calls that keep both systems in sync
Manage authentication, data mapping, transformation logic, and error handling for inbound and outbound data flows—including referrals, care plans, visit data, care team updates, and SDOH data—using REST, HL7, and FHIR-based interfaces as appropriate
Partner with clinical leadership to translate workflow needs into athenaClinicals build and configuration, moving fluidly between configuration and code as needed
Provide senior-level backup on athenaOne administration, including user roles and provider setup, departments and permission structures, templates, order sets, and quality and HCC risk-capture workflows tailored to a DSNP, dual-eligible population
Maintain technical documentation of integration architecture, API usage, data mappings, system configuration, and change history for audit and compliance purposes
Troubleshoot API errors, data sync failures, and integration issues across the athenaOne platform and the Salesforce-athenaClinicals integration, serving as the primary internal point of contact for EHR functionality and technical integration questions
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Health Informatics, Information Systems, or a related field; equivalent experience considered
3–5 years of experience working with athenahealth products, with the majority in hands-on API development against athenaOne/athenaClinicals REST and FHIR endpoints
Demonstrated, hands-on experience designing, building, and maintaining custom integrations using athenahealth's APIs, including OAuth-based authentication, webhook configuration, and endpoint-level troubleshooting
Proficiency with at least one modern programming or scripting language such as Python, JavaScript/Node.js, or Java for API development
Working knowledge of HL7 v2 and FHIR R4 data standards
Working familiarity with athenaClinicals configuration and administration, including user and provider setup, templates, and order sets
Understanding of HIPAA and healthcare data privacy and security requirements as they apply to system configuration and integrations
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across technical, clinical, and operational teams
Preferred
Hands-on experience with Salesforce or a comparable CRM or care-coordination platform integration
Experience with AI or agentic tooling in the athenahealth ecosystem, such as Marketplace AI-powered apps, ambient documentation tools, or LLM-based workflow automation
Familiarity with quality measures, HCC and risk adjustment documentation, and special needs plan (DSNP) reporting requirements
Experience in home-based care, geriatrics, or value-based care settings
Experience in a fast-growing, mission-driven healthcare organization
What Success Looks Like
athenaOne integrations are reliable, well-documented, and actively maintained in production with clear ownership
The Salesforce-athenaClinicals integration is stable, accurate, and supports seamless care coordination across clinical and operational teams
New athenahealth API capabilities and AI-enabled tools are evaluated proactively and piloted where they can meaningfully reduce burden on clinical teams
Clinical and operational stakeholders have a trusted, responsive internal resource for EHR functionality and integration questions
Integration architecture, API usage, and system configuration are thoroughly documented and audit-ready
Platform updates and API changes are managed with minimal disruption to clinical workflows
