Athletic Trainer – Member Engagement Contract, Part-Time | Remote | Flexible Hours | Potential Path to Full-Time WHO WE ARE Protera Health is a fast-growing digital health company reimagining musculoskeletal care. Founded by orthopedic surgeons and value-based care experts, we combine technology, evidence-based clinical pathways, and personalized support to help patients with back, neck, and joint conditions improve function, reduce pain, and live better lives. Our multidisciplinary virtual care team includes medical providers, physical therapists, health coaches, athletic trainers, and other healthcare professionals. Our aim is simple: treat patients as we would our own loved ones. THE ROLE Protera Health is seeking a licensed Athletic Trainer to support a targeted member re-engagement initiative. Working from claims and electronic medical record data, this individual will identify members with recurring fee-for-service musculoskeletal utilization, contact them to assess their current needs, and reconnect appropriate members with Protera’s clinical care team. This position is distinct from our clinical education Athletic Trainer role and our Enrollment team. It sits at the intersection of data-informed outreach, clinical review, member engagement, and triage. The ideal candidate has experience working directly with patients in a physical therapy, rehabilitation, orthopedic, or other musculoskeletal clinical setting. This is initially a part-time contract position, with the potential to transition to full-time as program demand grows. WHAT YOU WILL OWN Member Identification and Clinical Review Review claims and EMR data to identify members with recurring fee-for-service utilization related to musculoskeletal conditions. Evaluate available clinical information using established protocols and program criteria. Identify members who may benefit from re-engagement with Protera’s clinical care team. Escalate urgent or clinically concerning cases through the appropriate channels. Member Outreach and Re-engagement Conduct outbound telephone outreach to identified members. Assess each member’s current status, barriers to care, and interest in re-engaging with the program. Use clinical judgment and structured protocols to determine the appropriate next step. Route appropriate members into clinical care pathways and close cases that do not require further intervention. Navigate sensitive patient conversations with empathy, professionalism, and clarity. Documentation and Care Coordination Document outreach attempts, member conversations, clinical findings, and triage decisions accurately and promptly. Maintain documentation in accordance with organizational, regulatory, and privacy requirements. Coordinate with Protera’s multidisciplinary clinical team to ensure smooth handoffs for re-engaged members. Communicate relevant clinical or operational concerns to the appropriate team members. Reporting and Process Improvement Track outreach volume, contact rates, conversion rates, and re-engagement outcomes. Support reporting on program performance and member outcomes. Identify and report data-quality or workflow issues that may affect member identification or outreach. Recommend opportunities to improve the accuracy, efficiency, and effectiveness of the re-engagement process. WHO YOU ARE Current Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer certification and applicable state licensure in good standing. Experience working directly with patients in a physical therapy, rehabilitation, orthopedic, sports medicine, or musculoskeletal clinical setting. Strong clinical judgment and the ability to apply structured protocols consistently. Comfortable conducting outbound telephone outreach and navigating sensitive patient conversations. Excellent written documentation and verbal communication skills. Able to interpret clinical records and work across electronic medical record systems. Organized, dependable, and capable of managing work independently in a remote environment. Comfortable working in a developing program where workflows and responsibilities may evolve. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience working alongside musculoskeletal physicians, advanced practice providers, physical therapists, or rehabilitation professionals. Experience reviewing claims, utilization, or other healthcare data. Background in utilization review, case management, care coordination, or population health.
