Location: Singapore, Singapore

Thales is a global technology leader trusted by governments, institutions, and enterprises to tackle their most demanding challenges. From quantum applications and artificial intelligence to cybersecurity and 6G innovation, our solutions empower critical decisions rooted in human intelligence. Operating at the forefront of aerospace and space, cybersecurity and digital identity, we’re driven by a mission to build a future we can all trust.

In Singapore, Thales has been a trusted partner since 1973, originally focused on aerospace activities in the Asia-Pacific region. With 2,000 employees across three local sites, we deliver cutting-edge solutions across aerospace (including air traffic management), defence and security, and digital identity and cybersecurity sectors. Together, we’re shaping the future by enabling customers to make pivotal decisions that safeguard communities and power progress.

The Aviation Innovation Research (AIR) Lab

The joint CAAS-Thales innovation lab known as ‘AIR Lab’ started to operate on 1st November 2019 with the objective to develop Proof of Concepts (POCs) or Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) of advanced and open technologies for future Air Traffic Management (ATM). Currently, the joint lab employs a team of 50 engineers and air traffic controllers operating in a vibrant ecosystem involving several Singaporean SMEs and start-ups, as well as key research institutes

AIR Lab has benefited from close collaboration with experienced Thales ATM specialists from international centres of competence, supporting the development of local engineering capability and domain understanding.

The POCs and MVPs are co-developed with the CAAS engineers who have access to the same development tools and environment used by the Thales Engineers (provided by the Singapore branch of Thales Digital Factory). The POCs and MVPs are defined in collaboration with CAAS air traffic controllers through iterative workshops.

AIR Lab research outcomes will feed the next generation of products, including clearly disruptive outcomes addressing Safety and Security for Open architecture, data driven ATM Twin, Trajectory Based Operations and a Regional Collaboration Platform.

AIR Lab continues to benefit from research conducted in Europe through new architecture research which, among other objectives, aims at meeting much stricter safety standards for ground ATM systems in development by the European Aviation Safety Authority (EASA). This breakthrough architecture study is co-funded by the French government (CASSIOPEA).

Whom We Are Looking For

The domain of this expert is ATM Operations, with senior ATC background, complementary to CAAS in-house expertise, to provide further diversity and additional points of view. Provide domain expert opinion including but not restricted to other ANSP environments and other stakeholders in the Aviation sector, to the already existing world-class Operations capability within CAAS.

- Brings the knowledge of long-term trends in operations and supporting systems including key worldwide initiatives (e.g. SESAR, NextGen and other initiatives) and current and future roadmaps for key industry suppliers.

- Has participated in international ATM events and conferences, bringing a broad understanding of the ATM stakeholders, including a diversity of ANSPs, regulators and agencies, their roles and their key activities and areas of innovation.

- Brings ATM training experience and knowledge of instructor’s needs, as well as ATM system / ATM system definition, development, testing and acceptance experience (10 years is appreciated but not necessary)

The Operational Lead supports the squads as Customer Advocate for Future ATM Operational Value, collaborating in activities such as:

- Assessment of trends and use cases in Future ATM

- ATM concept of operations development

- ATC user stories creation, development and refinement: continuous grooming of use cases and their user stories (make them clear, feasible, testable)

- Refinement, demonstration and testing of operational components

- ATM awareness training for squad members and daily support with operational concepts extending the support received from CAAS and ensuring that operational concepts are maintained throughout the definition, production and testing phases

- Supporting workshops from the operational perspective and create deliverables to document CAAS’s vision of a future system

- Capability to assess and validate the operational benefits of the use cases in AIR Lab

Additionally, this expert role should be knowledgeable in the following domains:

- Knowledge of ANSP and ATMS technical deployment environments

- Software development, testing and validation platforms for ATM, real time software applications and/ or safety critical systems

- Previous experience working in Agile teams and demonstrated understanding of Agile principles and practices
