Position Summary
The AWS Cloud Engineer – IL6 / Backend & Database is responsible for designing, developing, deploying, securing, and maintaining cloud-based solutions within Amazon Web Services (AWS) Impact Level 6 (IL6) environments supporting mission-critical government and Department of Defense (DoD) programs.

The position combines advanced AWS cloud engineering, backend application development, and database engineering responsibilities. The engineer will develop and integrate backend services, APIs, data services, and database solutions while ensuring that infrastructure and applications meet stringent security, performance, scalability, availability, and compliance requirements.

This position is 100% remote.

Salary Range: 130k+


Key Responsibilities
  • Design, deploy, configure, and maintain secure AWS infrastructure within IL6 environments.
  • Develop, integrate, and maintain backend applications, microservices, APIs, and data services supporting mission-critical systems.
  • Design and implement scalable, highly available database architectures within AWS.
  • Develop and optimize relational databases, including schema design, indexing, queries, stored procedures, transactions, and performance tuning.
  • Work with technologies such as Amazon RDS, Aurora, PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, DynamoDB, and other AWS database services as appropriate.
  • Design and implement data models and database schemas that support application and mission requirements.
  • Develop cloud-native applications using serverless, containerized, and microservices architectures where appropriate.
  • Implement Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, or similar technologies.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines supporting automated application, infrastructure, and database deployments.
  • Implement and maintain AWS security controls consistent with DoD, DISA, FedRAMP, NIST, and RMF requirements.
  • Configure and manage AWS IAM, encryption, secrets management, security groups, logging, monitoring, and other security capabilities.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 5+ years of experience designing, developing, and administering AWS cloud environments.
  • Demonstrated experience working in AWS IL6, AWS GovCloud, or comparable high-security government cloud environments.
  • Experience with one or more enterprise database platforms such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, or Amazon Aurora.
  • Experience with AWS database services such as RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, or similar technologies.
  • Experience designing database schemas, data models, relationships, and data-access layers.
  • Experience developing REST APIs, microservices, or other backend services.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code, preferably Terraform and/or CloudFormation.
  • Experience with CI/CD and DevSecOps practices.
  • Experience implementing security controls within regulated AWS environments.
  • Understanding of NIST 800-53, RMF, FedRAMP, DISA STIGs, and DoD cybersecurity requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with AWS GovCloud and IL6 environments.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL/Aurora PostgreSQL in large-scale production environments.
  • Experience with DynamoDB or other NoSQL databases.
  • Experience with database replication, clustering, partitioning, and high-availability architectures.
