Back-End Engineer

Pocket Concierge (a subsidiary of American Express) is based in Kamiyacho, Tokyo, and provides booking options at some of the best restaurants that Japan has to offer. Since being acquired by American Express, many of our initiatives have been in pursuit of providing additional benefit to our cardmembers.

Our engineering team is small but looking to grow as we expand the offerings through our product. We work primarily in English but are a mix of Japanese and English native speakers. Our team has a hybrid working style, with time split between remote and days at the Kamiyacho office.

How will you make an impact in this role?

We are looking for a back-end engineer who can help contribute to the design, implementation, testing, and maintenance of features in our Rails application. You will be working alongside multiple other technical and non-technical stakeholders such as the Information Security and Compliance teams.

You won't be expected to know everything from day one. You'll work closely with experienced engineers through code reviews, pairing, and technical discussions. As you become familiar with the product, you'll be encouraged to take ownership of features from initial discussion through implementation and release.

• Professional experience developing modern web applications using an MVC web framework. Ruby/Rails experience is preferred but not required.
• Experience building and working with web APIs (e.g. REST or GraphQL).
• Experience writing automated tests and familiarity with common testing practices.
• Experience working with relational databases and SQL.
• The ability to communicate effectively in English within the engineering team.

Nice To Have Skills

• Japanese language ability.
• Experience using React, or similar frontend frameworks.
