Backend Engineer
TalvetteCompany Description
Our client provides a comprehensive home setup service. They understand that moving home is not only exciting but also stressful and emotional. Their shared goal is to make the moving process easier for everyone involved: buyers, sellers, tenants, and landlords. To achieve this, they leverage the latest technology to offer a simple and efficient service. However, it's the friendly and dedicated team behind the advanced technology and on the other end of the phone that truly sets them apart.
About the Role
Our client is looking for a Backend Engineer who is a systems thinker and can design and build reliable backend services end to end. Strong TypeScript is central to the role, while Python and FastAPI are part of the wider stack. You should have a strong understanding of distributed-system challenges, including retries, idempotency, backpressure, queues, and duplicate messages. You will be expected to care about latency, observability, safe releases, and production reliability from the start. An AI-native approach to engineering is a must-have, with tools such as Claude Code forming part of your engineering workflow.
Key Responsibilities
- Backend architecture and domain design across households, properties, partners, suppliers and service orders.
- APIs, data contracts, queues and state machines that allow services and AI agents to act predictably across the platform.
- Performance and reliability, including latency budgets, observability, rollback readiness and safe incremental releases.
- Agent-facing backend capabilities with appropriate permissions, idempotency, audit trails and strong controls around sensitive or financial actions.
- Production-quality implementation in TypeScript, with collaboration across Python/FastAPI services, Next.js applications and AWS infrastructure where required.
- Technical decisions and trade-offs are documented clearly so the wider engineering team can understand and build on them.
- Close collaboration with our client's engineering leadership and other engineers to identify risks, remove blockers and continuously improve engineering standards.
- First 90 Days
- Develop a strong understanding of the company's core entities, service-order lifecycle, integrations and agent interactions.
- Own and ship a meaningful backend capability from technical design through production.
- Improve or extend a core API, state machine, queue or integration with appropriate observability and failure handling.
- Demonstrate sound judgement around retries, idempotency, permissions, latency and production failure modes.
- Establish an effective working rhythm with the UK engineering team and contribute clearly to technical discussions and reviews.
Skills & Qualifications
- 3+ years of professional experience as a Backend Engineer, with a strong focus on Python FastAPI.
- Professional experience with TypeScript and AWS; experience with Laravel is a plus.
- Experience architecting systems used at a meaningful production scale.
- Experience with agentic systems, AI products, evals or permissioned tool use.
- Experience with UK property, utilities, fintech or other regulated/service-heavy domains.
- Experience improving engineering standards, reviewing other engineers' work or mentoring teammates.
- Strong side projects or open-source work that demonstrate systems thinking and ownership.
- Proven experience designing and operating real backend systems in production, with the ability to explain architectural decisions and trade-offs.
- A strong understanding of how systems behave under failure and at significantly higher volumes, beyond the happy path.
- Strong TypeScript skills, with the ability to become productive quickly in adjacent technologies when required by the problem.
- A solid understanding of retries, idempotency, backpressure, message queues, data consistency and duplicate-event handling.
- Demonstrated ability to take ownership of problems without requiring fully specified tickets or constant direction.
- Experience using AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor or equivalent as part of the normal engineering workflow, with the ability to critically review their output.
- Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including the ability to raise blockers early and explain trade-offs in practical terms.
- Based in Bangladesh and available to work UK-aligned hours.
- Comfortable directing coding agents, critically reviewing their output, using them to accelerate delivery, and developing a clear point of view on where AI-assisted engineering works well and where human judgement is essential.
- Advanced English fluency needed.
