Job Description - Building Safety Codes Officer II - Residential (55742) Job Description Building Safety Codes Officer II - Residential Job Number : 55742 Join our Development Services team and play a vital role in ensuring the safety and integrity of Edmonton's built environment. We are looking for dedicated professionals to join us as Building Safety Codes Officer IIs to help shape a safe and thriving city. This role functions as a full working level technical plans examiner for residential, Part 3, and Part 9 structures. You will administer provincial safety code duties, including auditing for compliance with the Safety Codes Act and the Alberta Building Code. You will serve as a technical expert, interacting directly with community partners and collaborators to provide information and grant permits. What will you do? Conduct thorough plans examinations and reviews of permit applications for new constructions and renovations to ensure compliance with bylaws and building codes Issue building permits and maintain the authority to withhold, suspend, or revoke permits through established processes Coach applicants through issues related to permit applications and follow up to ensure deficiencies are corrected Consult with internal municipal units and provincial authorities on complex code interpretations to ensure cohesive reporting Prepare legal agreements for cranes and hoardings and coordinate approvals with departments like Fire Rescue Services and Alberta Health Services Provide expert interpretations of the Building Code and bylaws to contractors, designers, and developers Inspect projects for alignment with Occupational Health and Safety Standards and participate in environmental protection training Training in other Safety Codes areas as business needs require Qualifications : Completion of the twelfth (12th) school grade Journeyman carpenter, plumber, electrician, sheet metal worker, or bricklayer certification recognized in Alberta plus 5 years of post-certification experience in the building construction industry OR a two-year technology diploma in a related field plus 7 years of post-diploma experience in the building construction industry OR an engineering or architecture degree recognized in Canada plus 5 years of experience in the building construction industry (with at least 1 year post-degree) Registered as a Safety Codes Officer with certification in "Residential," "Part 9," and "Part 3" (Group A Level 3) with the Safety Codes Council in Alberta Assets: Experience in construction of buildings, including understanding project scheduling and best practices Completion of additional Safety Codes courses Skills required for success: Deep understanding of standard methods, techniques, materials, and equipment used in residential, Part 9, and Part 3 projects Expert application of the Safety Codes Act, Alberta Building Code, and City Bylaws Critical analysis and interpretation of complex legislation Identification of construction that fails to meet code intent or presents hazardous conditions Evaluation of structural stability through plan reviews or on-site inspections Translation of technical concepts and interpretations into simple terms for homeowners and community partners Organization and management of multiple priorities and projects under tight deadlines Impartial and transparent decision-making in the application of Safety Codes Proficiency in data entry, communication tools, and plan review software (e.g., POSSE) Alignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies ( https://bit.ly/4brRrXm ) Embracing a culture of equity, diversity, reconciliation and inclusion Conditions of Employment: Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and coveralls Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) or higher. Candidates will be required to arrange their own transportation and, where appropriate, will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the candidate to obtain business-use auto insurance Applicants may be tested Work Environment: Note : This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52 The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time.
