The Business Development Manager is responsible for developing, negotiating, implementing, and managing wholesale power sales arrangements with assigned wholesale customers across the Carolinas. The role serves as a primary commercial and relationship lead for strategic wholesale customers, supporting long-term revenue protection, contract compliance, customer satisfaction, and new business development opportunities.
The Carolinas Wholesale group manages approximately 20+ contracts with 15+ wholesale customers, including North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation, North Carolina Eastern Municipal Power Agency, the Public Works Commission for the City of Fayetteville, and Central Electric Power Cooperative. These customers represent some of Duke Energy’s largest customer relationships that generate approximately $2 billion in annual total revenues and serve 5,500+MWs of load.
This position requires strong commercial judgment, autonomous and independent thinking, customer relationship management, contract negotiation, analytical problem-solving, and cross-functional leadership. The incumbent must be able to assess complex issues, develop recommendations with limited direction, and work closely with internal partners in regulatory, legal, risk management, finance, accounting, operations, and other business areas to structure transactions, resolve customer issues, manage risk, and ensure effective negotiations, implementation, and execution of wholesale power agreements.
Responsibilities
Develop, negotiate, and execute wholesale power sales proposals, contract extensions, amendments, and other commercial arrangements for assigned customers in the Carolinas.
Identify and originate business development opportunities that support long-term wholesale sales objectives, customer retention, and strategic revenue growth.
Apply autonomous judgment and independent analysis to evaluate customer needs, commercial risks, and strategic options, escalating issues when appropriate while driving matters toward practical resolution.
Design creative contract structures that balance customer needs, company objectives, regulatory requirements, operational considerations, and risk mitigation.
Build and maintain strong executive, commercial, and operational relationships with assigned wholesale customers to enhance Duke Energy’s competitive position and support mutual business goals.
Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned wholesale customers, coordinating timely and thorough responses to customer questions, concerns, service issues, contract matters, and emerging business needs.
Implement, administer, and manage contract terms and conditions to ensure accurate execution, compliance, billing support, issue resolution, and alignment with approved business practices.
Lead cross-functional coordination with regulatory, legal, risk management, financial planning and analysis, accounting, operations, and other internal teams to evaluate deal concepts, financial implications, customer issues, and contractual obligations.
Identify, analyze, document, and mitigate regulatory, credit, pricing, operational, contractual, and commercial risks while ensuring contract provisions protect company interests and comply with company policies.
Maintain current knowledge of wholesale power markets, ratemaking concepts, utility business drivers, legislation, regulatory developments, technologies, and other factors affecting wholesale customers and contract structures.
