Apply Job Type Full-time Description This position is contingent upon the successful award of a government contract. Hiring and employment are subject to contract award and funding approval. Primary purpose: Provides strategic and technical expertise in communicable disease surveillance, case investigation workflows, public health reporting, surveillance modernization, and epidemiologic practice. Ensures the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Electronic Disease Surveillance System Base System (NBS) capabilities align with client priorities, jurisdictional needs, and national surveillance standards. Collaborates with state, local, tribal, and territorial (STLT) public health programs, informaticians, architects, product owners, and software development teams to translate epidemiologic requirements into technical solutions that improve disease surveillance and outbreak response. A successful candidate will do the following: Provide epidemiology and public health surveillance expertise to support CDC and jurisdictional modernization initiatives Advise solution teams on communicable disease surveillance workflows, case investigation, public health reporting, and epidemiologic best practices Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop, validate, and refine epidemiologic requirements, functional designs, user stories, and acceptance criteria Ensure surveillance data flows, business rules, and system capabilities support real-world public health investigation, reporting, and case management workflows Evaluate proposed modernization features and recommend improvements that enhance the efficiency, usability, and data quality of surveillance workflows for federal and STLT) public health users Support implementation planning, operational readiness, user adoption, and change management for the successful adoption of modernized surveillance capabilities across public health jurisdictions Build consensus among diverse public health stakeholders, balancing jurisdiction-specific needs with national standardization goals Communicate complex epidemiologic concepts to technical teams, epidemiologists, and public health leadership Participate in workshops, solution demonstrations and collaborative engagements with CDC and jurisdictional stakeholders Evaluate the impact of surveillance policy, Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) position statements, and national standards on modernization priorities and system capabilities Requirements Master's degree and at least 10 years, or bachelor's degree and at least 12 years, of progressively responsible experience in public health surveillance and epidemiology Experience supporting CDC and/or STLT public health agencies Experience working on multidisciplinary teams involving public health, informatics, and software development Demonstrated knowledge and experience with: National public health surveillance systems (i.e., National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System [NNDSS]) including event reporting and investigation Disease reporting regulations Surveillance quality assurance, including assessment of data completeness, timeliness, validity, consistency, and adherence to national surveillance reporting standards Translating epidemiologic and surveillance workflows into business requirements, functional specifications, user stories, or system requirements Ability to successfully complete a Position of Public Trust Level 5 background investigation Preferred qualifications: Master’s degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, Biostatistics, Health Informatics, or related field Experience implementing or integrating surveillance data streams, including ELR, eCR, syndromic surveillance, immunization information systems (IIS), vital records, and other public health data sources Demonstrated leadership in national public health surveillance modernization efforts, such as participation in CDC or CSTE governance groups or NBS user groups Experience implementing system or workflow updates to adopt new or revised eCR, ELR, FHIR, or MMG specifications Additional information: We are a remote organization, but we prioritize in-person collaboration during key events such as our annual company meeting.
