Job Summary
We are currently seeking an Chemical and Environmental Research Internship for Summer 2027. This position is a Co-op/Internship opportunity located in Columbus, OH.
We are seeking a highly motivated Engineering or Science Co-op/Intern to support laboratory research, technology development, and experimental testing within an applied research environment. The selected candidate will work alongside engineers and scientists to develop, evaluate, and optimize emerging environmental technologies focused on water quality, contaminant monitoring, treatment processes, and environmental sustainability.
This position provides hands-on experience designing and conducting experiments, operating laboratory equipment, analyzing data, constructing test systems, and supporting the advancement of cutting-edge technologies from concept through prototype evaluation.
Responsibilities
The selected individual will collaborate closely with scientists and engineers on laboratory and pilot-scale systems to support the development and evaluation of emerging environmental technologies focused on contaminant removal and neutralization. Responsibilities may include:
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, chemists, and environmental scientists on laboratory and pilot-scale research systems
- Support development, testing, and optimization of environmental monitoring and treatment technologies
- Assist with planning and execution of laboratory and bench-scale experiments
- Assemble, operate, and troubleshoot experimental equipment and prototype systems
- Operate laboratory instrumentation and collect experimental data
- Organize, analyze, and visualize data using spreadsheet and analytical software tools
- Prepare samples, standards, reagents, and test solutions according to established procedures
- Maintain detailed laboratory records and document experimental observations
- Assist with preparation of technical reports, presentations, and research summaries
- Support routine laboratory maintenance, inventory management, and equipment upkeep
- Participate in laboratory safety activities and maintain a safe, organized workspace
Key Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related technical discipline
- Completed sophomore year or higher (preferred)
- Interest in laboratory research, experimental testing, and technology development
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a technical team
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and standard data analysis tools; experience with data analysis or programming tools preferred
- Ability to stand for more than 4 hours continuously and lift more than 20 lbs
- Willingness to learn and follow strict safety protocols for hazardous chemicals
- Applicants for this position must be a U.S. Person, as defined by U.S. export control laws.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous laboratory, research, or engineering project experience
- Experience collecting and analyzing experimental data
- Familiarity with water treatment, environmental engineering, chemical processing, or analytical chemistry
- Experience building, modifying, or troubleshooting laboratory equipment
- Coursework involving fluid systems, transport processes, environmental systems, chemistry, or process engineering
- Applicants available to work part-time during the school year will be given preference
Compensation Data
The salary range for this role is $20.00 – $40.00 per hour, in addition to a $2,000 housing stipend for students relocating more than 50 miles from home and university. Internship pay is benchmarked against national averages taking into consideration a student's major and year in school.
