Salary Range: $165,000.00 To $185,000.00 Annually About AIDS United AIDS United’s mission is to end the HIV epidemic in the United States. We advance this mission through strategic grantmaking, policy and advocacy, organizational capacity building, and community-informed research. With an annual budget of approximately $8–$10 million and a primarily remote staff of more than 35 professionals, AIDS United supports hundreds of community-based organizations nationwide, prioritizing work in the U.S. South and among communities most affected by HIV. Founded through the merger of the National AIDS Fund and AIDS Action Council, AIDS United’s policy efforts are rooted in decades of leadership in the HIV sector. Our Public Policy Council includes many of the country’s leading HIV service and advocacy organizations and helps shape our national policy priorities. AIDS United is committed to ensuring that our staff, Board of Trustees, and consultants reflect the diversity of the communities most affected by the HIV epidemic. This commitment includes honoring the leadership and lived experience of people living with HIV and advancing racial, gender, health, and social justice throughout our work. Position Summary The Chief Administrative and Financial Officer (CAO/CFO) serves as AIDS United’s senior executive responsible for financial strategy, enterprise administration, organizational infrastructure, and operational risk. Reporting to the President and CEO and serving as a member of the Executive Leadership Team, the CAO/CFO ensures the organization has the financial resources, systems, controls, technology, talent practices, and administrative capacity necessary to achieve its mission sustainably. The CAO/CFO provides strategic and hands-on leadership across finance, accounting, budgeting, forecasting, grants management, human resources, information technology, cybersecurity, contracts, procurement, facilities, insurance, enterprise risk management, and organizational operations. The position establishes administrative policies, recommends enterprise-wide operational improvements, and exercises decision-making authority within Board-approved policies and budget parameters while serving as a trusted advisor to the President, CEO, and Board. Executive Leadership and Organizational Strategy Partner with executive leadership to translate organizational strategy into multi-year financial and operational plans. Evaluate the financial, workforce, technology, compliance, and risk implications of major decisions while fostering a culture of accountability, transparency, operational excellence, collaboration, inclusion, and continuous improvement across the organization. Financial Strategy, Planning and Stewardship Lead all aspects of financial management, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, cash management, investments, reserves, financial reporting, internal controls, and long-range financial planning. Ensure timely, accurate financial reporting, maintain multi-year financial models, and provide executive decision support that strengthens organizational sustainability. Administration, Technology and Organizational Infrastructure Provide executive leadership for organizational infrastructure, including information technology, cybersecurity, AI governance, systems modernization, procurement, data governance, business continuity, facilities, vendor management, and administrative operations. Establish procurement standards that promote fiscal stewardship, appropriate approvals, contract compliance, and value-based purchasing while ensuring outsourced service providers meet agreed performance expectations. People Operations and Organizational Effectiveness Serve as the executive responsible for Human Resources strategy and employment compliance. Oversee recruitment, compensation, benefits, payroll, performance management, employee relations, investigations, organizational restructuring, workforce planning, manager development, leadership coaching, and legally compliant employment practices across a geographically dispersed workforce. Advance equitable, transparent, and inclusive people practices aligned with AIDS United's values. Risk Management and Organizational Resilience Maintain an enterprise-wide risk management framework addressing financial, operational, legal, technology, cybersecurity, people, reputational, and business continuity risks. Lead organizational response to operational disruptions, cybersecurity incidents, compliance matters, financial emergencies, and other enterprise risks while ensuring appropriate mitigation strategies and Board reporting. Board and Governance Support Serve as the principal strategic advisor to the Board Treasurer and Finance, Audit, and Investment Committees. Present clear financial, operational, compliance, and enterprise risk information that supports effective governance, strategic decision-making, and fiduciary oversight. Operational Capability Demonstrated success improving organizational systems, policies, controls, and cross-functional processes while leading internal staff and outsourced professional service providers. Experience leading geographically dispersed teams and maintaining accountability, engagement, communication, and performance expectations is essential. Work environment AIDS United is a primarily virtual organization headquartered in Washington, DC. The CAO/CFO may work remotely but should reside within reasonable proximity to the Washington metropolitan area and be available for Board meetings, staff convenings, vendor or facilities matters, and other in-person needs. The role requires effective leadership across a distributed workforce and occasional travel. Compensation and benefits The salary range for this position is $165,000–$185,000 , commensurate with the depth and relevance of prior experience, readiness to assume the full portfolio, specialized expertise, internal equity, and organizational resources. AIDS United offers a comprehensive benefits package that currently includes employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance; a retirement plan with an employer contribution; a flexible spending account; an unlimited annual leave policy; paid sick leave; 11 paid holidays; and support for professional development and leadership training. Equal opportunity and accessibility AIDS United is committed to equitable and inclusive employment practices. Qualified applicants are considered without regard to race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, genetic information, HIV status, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law.
