Essential Job Functions Manages and underwrites an assigned blended portfolio of small and middle market business, including new business, renewals, and endorsements, within the Service Center to achieve profitability and meet financial objectives Underwrite consolidations by evaluating risk factors, coverage needs, and pricing considerations to align with current strategic guidelines Underwrite accounts countrywide, requiring a deep understanding of various regional appetites and strategy Utilize strong negotiation and sales skills to support the Account Consultant team in interactions with agents and insureds Selects profitable new business through analysis of the risks presented, coverage requested, and losses incurred Classifies and prices risks appropriately using underwriting judgement and analytical tools and resources Handles complex or larger accounts which may require reinsurance placement Monitor premium growth for assigned territory, conducting profit and growth analysis by territory and agency Identify opportunities for book improvement and work with Distribution on implementing necessary changes Keeps current on state/territory issues and regulations Develops and maintains strong relationships with agents, traveling as needed for agency visits Communicates effectively, providing prompt and professional service Develops and maintains strong internal relationships within the underwriting team and with other business units such as loss control, customer service, claims, and marketing Provides input and data to help drive and implement strategic underwriting initiatives Maintains appropriate underwriting file documentation Demonstrates a commitment to continuing education and development Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in relevant field and 2 years of experience in Underwriting Or 4 years of experience in Underwriting Preferred Qualifications Commercial Lines Underwriting experience Experience in underwriting a variety of commercial lines accounts; premium sizes CPCU, CIC, AU, ARM, CRIS, or other insurance designations Knowledge Skills and Abilities Strong knowledge of underwriting principles and guidelines to evaluate and manage complex accounts effectively Ability to manage a high volume of accounts with a focus on efficiency and accuracy Ability to apply advanced underwriting concepts including risk selection, exposure and hazard identification and control, coverage implications, and loss analysis Ability to think analytically about business problems, make recommendations and propose solutions Effective verbal and written communication skills, including negotiation, presentation, and influence to achieve favorable outcomes Knowledge of Commercial Lines coverages and policies in assigned states Demonstration of solid time, organizational, and desk management skills Ability to professionally interact with our customers Ability to investigate, gather facts and information, and analyze coverage Understand the importance of capturing data Possess an innovative and continuous improvement mindset Possess a positive, professional, cooperative, and quality-conscious service attitude Ability to work under pressure, deal with interpersonal conflict, and handle a heavy workload Possesses analytical and problem-solving skills Possesses verbal and written communication skills, including negotiation, presentation, and influence skills Ability to understand Central Insurance’s policies and processes Ability to travel to assigned agents, which potential includes flying and overnight travel, in addition to virtual engagement to effectively support underwriting goals and strengthen business relationships Total Rewards Central establishes base pay based on several factors including labor market data and an evaluation of candidate qualifications relative to role requirements.
