Position Description

As a Cloud Platform Engineer at CGI, you’ll help shape and operate secure, resilient cloud services that support critical client missions. Joining GTO Advisory on a major long-term secure cloud programme, you’ll combine hands-on engineering with technical leadership to mobilise, automate and continually improve a highly controlled Oracle Cloud Infrastructure environment.

You’ll have the ownership to solve complex challenges, influence engineering standards and create smarter ways of working, supported by specialists across security, architecture, service management and engineering. With opportunities to deepen your cloud expertise and share your knowledge with others, you’ll play a key role in delivering reliable, high-value services while building your career within CGI’s collaborative community.

CGI was recognised in the Sunday Times Best Places to Work List 2025 and has been named a UK ‘Best Employer’ by the Financial Times. We offer a competitive salary, excellent pension, private healthcare, plus a share scheme (3.5% + 3.5% matching) which makes you a CGI Partner not just an employee.

We are committed to inclusivity, building a genuinely diverse community of tech talent and inspiring everyone to pursue careers in our sector, including our Armed Forces, and are proud to hold a Gold Award in recognition of our support of the Armed Forces Corporate Covenant. Join us and you’ll be part of an open, friendly community of experts. We’ll train and support you in taking your career wherever you want it to go.

Your future duties and responsibilities

In this role, you will provide hands-on technical leadership across the mobilisation, transition and ongoing operation of a secure cloud platform. You’ll configure, operate and improve OCI services and their supporting infrastructure, using automation and Infrastructure as Code to create reliable, repeatable solutions and reduce manual effort.

You’ll take ownership of complex engineering challenges while working collaboratively with security, architecture, service management and engineering colleagues. You’ll help establish engineering standards, share your expertise with other engineers and identify creative opportunities to improve resilience, performance and operational effectiveness.

You’ll be supported by a strong technical community while continuing to develop your expertise across cloud and platform technologies.

  • Lead & Engineer: Provide hands-on technical leadership across the build, transition and operation of a secure cloud platform.
  • Configure & Improve: Operate, maintain and continually enhance OCI services and supporting infrastructure.
  • Automate & Simplify: Develop repeatable infrastructure and operational automation using Infrastructure as Code, Terraform and scripting.
  • Operate & Troubleshoot: Administer Kubernetes, Linux, networking and other platform components aligned to your areas of expertise.
  • Monitor & Optimise: Implement monitoring, logging, alerting and observability to strengthen service reliability and performance.
  • Diagnose & Resolve: Lead the investigation and resolution of complex incidents and problems within a critical service environment.
  • Plan & Assure: Coordinate releases, changes and maintenance activity while protecting service continuity.
  • Secure & Strengthen: Apply secure-by-design principles and contribute to capacity planning, resilience and lifecycle management.
  • Set Standards & Support: Review technical work, maintain clear documentation and mentor other engineers without formal line management responsibility.
  • Innovate & Improve: Identify opportunities to reduce manual effort, prevent recurring issues and improve the safety and effectiveness of the service.

Required Qualifications To Be Successful In This Role

You should bring substantial hands-on experience of building, operating or improving production cloud or platform services, together with evidence of technical leadership on complex engineering work.

You’ll need strong operational judgement, analytical problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across technical disciplines.

*Deep expertise in at least two relevant platform domains is important. Extensive OCI experience is advantageous rather than essential, with targeted OCI training and certification available before deployment where required.*

  • Cloud & Platform Experience: Substantial hands-on experience building, operating or improving production cloud or platform services.
  • Technical Leadership: Proven ability to lead complex engineering activity, make sound technical decisions and influence across team boundaries.
  • Platform Operations: Strong knowledge of modern cloud/platform operations, including incident, problem, change and release practices.
  • Infrastructure as Code: Practical experience with Infrastructure as Code, automation and scripting, with Terraform particularly relevant.
  • Technical Depth: Deep capability in at least two areas such as Kubernetes/container platforms, Linux, cloud or data centre networking, automation, observability, OCI/Oracle technologies, cloud security or physical infrastructure.
  • Problem Solving: Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, including the ability to work methodically during high-impact incidents.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Clear written and verbal communication skills, alongside a collaborative approach to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
  • Cloud Knowledge: OCI experience or certification is advantageous, as is AWS engineering or operations experience.
  • Secure Environments: Experience operating isolated, disconnected, private cloud or similarly controlled environments is desirable.
  • Certifications: Relevant Kubernetes, Linux, networking, security, service management or cloud certifications are advantageous.
  • Development: If you do not have substantial OCI experience, you must be willing to undertake targeted OCI training and certification before deployment.
  • Location & Attendance: This is initially a hybrid role but you must live within practical commuting distance of either Gloucester or London and be willing to attend the other location when operationally required. The normal expectation is at least two days per week onsite, although some secure assignments may require up to five days onsite.
  • Shift Working: You must be willing to work across the current 08:00–16:00 and 16:00–00:00 shifts as part of an agreed operational rota. An additional shift allowance applies to eligible late-shift working. There is currently no routine weekend, bank holiday or on-call requirement.
  • Security Clearance: You must be a sole British citizen and be able and willing to obtain and maintain SC clearance before deployment. You must also be willing to undergo higher-level national security vetting where required and continue to meet the relevant clearance conditions.

Existing SC or higher-level clearance is advantageous but not essential, and CGI will support the appropriate sponsorship or transfer process for successful applicants.
