Job Description: Position Summary The College Writer is a creative and experienced storyteller with a strong sense of narrative, voice, and audience. A versatile and collaborative partner, the successful candidate will produce compelling, high-quality content ranging from in-depth features and profiles to concise news stories, email messages, captions, and headlines. The writer will play a central role in bringing to life the experiences of students, faculty, staff, and alumni in ways that build connection, credibility, and distinction. This position may be expected to visit campus on occasion for meetings, to cover a story, or for major College events. With the exception of federal/state mandated benefits, this position is non-benefited part-time with an estimated schedule of 20-25 hours per week (total work hours per year are limited to under 910). Responsibilities Research and write engaging, thoughtfully reported feature stories, profiles, and news content for Hamilton’s magazine, website, and newsletters. Conduct interviews with students, faculty, staff, and alumni, often translating complex ideas or technical topics into clear, audience-focused narratives. Edit and revise content to ensure accuracy, clarity, and alignment with Hamilton’s editorial voice and AP style. Participate periodically in weekly Content Strategy meetings to generate story ideas, shape narratives, and align on cross-platform priorities. Provide writing support for high-impact projects, marketing campaigns, and institutional initiatives. Estimated time commitment is 20-25 hours per week. Total hours worked per year cannot exceed Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, English, or related field. At least two years of professional writing experience. Experience writing for multiple formats (longform features, short web/email copy, Q&As, captions, newsletters, etc.). Knowledge of AP Style preferred. Experience in higher education or nonprofit settings preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Exceptional and proven writing, interviewing, and editing skills, with attention to accuracy and detail. Ability to adapt writing style and tone for different audiences, from prospective students to alumni. Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines. Collaborative mindset with strong interpersonal skills; comfortable working with diverse stakeholders. Curiosity, creativity, and a commitment to continuous learning about evolving digital content practices. Demonstrated editing and fact-checking skills.
