Bring Your Ideas. Build Your Career.
At Indiana Farmers Insurance, care is part of our business and our culture. As a mutual insurance company, we take a long-term view of serving our members, supporting our independent agency partners, and investing in our people. Our ICARE values of Innovation, Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, and Empowerment shape an environment where associates can contribute ideas, learn from one another, take ownership of their work, and grow their expertise. If you want meaningful work, supportive colleagues, and the opportunity to help improve how we serve others, we would like to meet you.
Why This Role Matters
As a Commercial Underwriter I, you will help protect businesses by evaluating risk, making sound underwriting decisions, and supporting the independent agency partners who serve our members. You will manage an assigned commercial lines book of business with guidance appropriate to account complexity and authority, balancing responsive service with risk selection, pricing, retention, and profitable growth.
What You Will Do
- Review commercial applications, renewals, policy changes, inspections, audits, loss information, and supporting business information to assess eligibility and risk acceptability within underwriting guidelines and assigned authority.
- Analyze business operations, property and liability exposures, classifications, loss experience, coverage needs, premiums, limits, retentions, and account information to support appropriate underwriting decisions.
- Document risk assessments, selection rationale, and guideline exceptions to maintain clear and supportable underwriting files.
- Communicate with agents, members, and internal partners about commercial coverages, classifications, business exposures, and account questions to support timely service and informed decisions.
- Develop productive working relationships with assigned commercial agents to support profitable growth, retention, and responsive underwriting service.
- Monitor pricing, retention, growth, loss experience, and profitability indicators to manage the assigned book of business.
- Identify risks that may require facultative reinsurance and prepare exposure, loss, and account information with support from experienced underwriting associates.
- Maintain current underwriting and industry knowledge through continuing education and provide technical guidance to less experienced underwriting associates and agents as needed.
How You Will Contribute
You will be successful by applying sound judgment, staying organized across a deadline-driven workload, and communicating clearly with agency partners and colleagues. This role is well suited to someone who is resourceful, self-motivated, and comfortable managing an assigned desk with limited supervision while knowing when to escalate questions outside of assigned authority.
What You Will Bring
- A college degree or related work experience is preferred.
- Two (2) or more years of commercial lines underwriting experience or comparable commercial property and casualty underwriting experience.
- Insurance designation or insurance-related coursework is preferred.
- Working knowledge of commercial coverages, classifications, business exposures, underwriting guidelines, delegated authority, and documentation standards.
- The ability to assess risk information, make consistent decisions, and escalate matters outside assigned authority.
- Strong organization, problem-solving, professional communication, and customer focus, with the ability to balance underwriting requirements and service expectations.
- A collaborative approach to working with agents, members, underwriting colleagues, and internal partners.
- Interest in using AI-enabled tools responsibly to improve efficiency, decision-making, quality, and business outcomes.
