Commercial Project Accountant
The Project Accountant plays a pivotal role in driving strategic financial decisions and managing project lifecycles. This position is responsible for building, maintaining, and analyzing financial information to produce a pricing budget. Additionally, the role ensures strict project financial controls, tracking milestones, managing project cash flows, and delivering variance analysis to senior leadership.
Responsibilities:
Pricing
- Version Control: Establish and maintain strict version control protocols (v1.0, v1.1, v2.0) and change logs to track edits, code modifications, and structural updates over time.
- Integrity Auditing: Implement automated audit checks, balance sheet balancing alerts, and error-trapping cells (ISERROR, IFERROR) across all tabs to ensure zero structural breaks.
- Strategic Support: Translate complex operational datasets into clear financial budgets that will deliver best estimate pricing for potential bids
Project Accounting & Control
- Cost Management: Monitor and analyze end-to-end project financial performance against established budgets, baselines, and commercial contracts.
- Revenue Recognition: Oversee project accounting structures, ensuring compliance with IFRS 15 (Revenue from Contracts with Customers) or relevant accounting standards.
- Variance Analysis: Conduct monthly variance analysis of actual vs. budgeted project costs, identifying risks, cost overruns, and mitigations.
- Cash Flow Optimization: Forecast project cash flows, track progress billings, manage working capital requirements, and ensure timely invoicing and collections.
Reporting & Stakeholder Collaboration
- Performance Dashboards: Prepare monthly financial report packs, project dashboards for project managers and leadership.
- Cross-Functional Alignment: Partner closely with Project Managers and General Finance teams to validate assumptions and keep financial plans aligned with project execution.
- Audit Support: Assist with internal and external audit requirements by providing clear documentation, model assumptions, and reconciliations for project accounts.
Qualifications:
- Degree: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field.
- Certifications: Professional certification such as CPA, ACCA, CMA, CFA, or specialized Financial Modelling certification (e.g., FMI) is highly preferred.
- Experience: 3-5 years of progressive experience combining modelling, pricing and project finance.
- Advanced Excel: Expert-level proficiency in Microsoft Excel (VBA/macros, dynamic arrays, advanced financial functions, and data visual tools).
- Systems Experience: Hands-on experience with project management financial tools.
- Financial Literacy: Strong technical understanding of corporate finance theories, accounting frameworks (IFRS/GAAP), and financial statements.
- Analytical Thinking: Exceptional problem-solving skills with a meticulous eye for detail.
- Communication: Ability to distill complex financial concepts into easily understandable insights for non-finance stakeholders.
- Time Management: Ability to thrive under tight deadlines and simultaneously manage multiple project deliverables.
- Technical Translation: Translate complex financial projections, Excel logic, and accounting variances into clear, actionable commercial insights for non-finance teams (e.g., Project Managers, Engineers, and Procurement).
- Cross-Functional Alignment: Partner seamlessly with multi-disciplinary project leaders to extract operational data, challenge baseline assumptions, and build consensus on budget adjustments.
- Influencing & Negotiation: Present analytical findings confidently to support commercial negotiations, contractor discussions, and project variance approvals
- Global Collaboration: Maintain a professional, collaborative demeanor across diverse multinational teams, ensuring clear verbal and written communication across all tiers of the organization.
