Salary: $18.20 Hourly Work Schedule: 15-20 hours per week; shifts based on operational need of the organization. Applicants MUST be available to work year-round, even when classes are not in session, plus some nights and weekends. This position will work primarily on campus with the potential of performing some work hours remotely based on operational need. OVERVIEW Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) employs student-focused professionals with equity-mindsets. Established in 1963, Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) is a non-profit corporation led by a 14-member board of elected student leaders. ASI is an auxiliary organization authorized by the California State University Board of Trustees to perform Student Life functions for Cal Poly Pomona students. ASI provides opportunities for student engagement, student leadership and employment, and a multitude of Student Life programs and services e.g., recreation and wellbeing, student union and activities, student government, clubs and organizations, food pantry, and childcare. The administrative and student support areas of ASI include human resources, financial services, information technology, facilities management, and marketing. ASI employs approximately 500 part-time students and 60 full-time staff members. ASI accepts the responsibility for conscientiously managing mandatory student fees and state-owned facilities: $18M annual operating budget, $5M annual debt service, approximately $24M in reserves, and 294,253 square feet of student space (student union, recreation center, and pool). ASI is in the Cal Poly Pomona Division of Student Affairs with a dashed reporting line to Administrative Affairs. With a commitment to learning, continuous improvement, and innovation, ASI is looking for a dynamic team member who supports team learning, co-creation, radical candor, psychological safety, growth mindset, and lives out equity, diversity, and inclusion practices.  POSITION DEFINITION Under general supervision from the Communications and additional supervision and delegation of duties provided by the Communication Supervisor, the Communication Assistant performs routine and non-routine tasks in support of Associated Students, Incorporated’s (ASI’s) dynamic communications team. The Communication Assistant provides content for various materials including the ASI website, various marketing mediums, stories for ASI publications, media releases , and more. ESSENTIAL DUTIES Writes copy for the following: campaigns, press releases, video scripts, radio ads , flyers, brochures, articles, newsletters, annual reports, external client projects, and other publications Reads, proofs, and edits to detect errors/style discrepancies in written communication, pre-press projects such as press releases, flyers, brochures, articles, newsletters, annual reports, external client projects, and other publications Records and tracks measurable outcomes of the organization’s blog and email marketing efforts Reports information provided by specific ASI departments and the campus community Markets various services, programs, and events through writing both informative and lifestyle stories for various print and digital mediums Ensures that changes/revisions are properly annotated, and that typeset material is correct Performs fact-checking duties Follows and helps to maintain the ASI Writing Style Guide Formulates and writes articles that cover marketing events Contributes story ideas and conducts interviews Assists in compiling local media coverage report and media clips Assists in presentations about communication and public relations efforts Assists in the development and administration of the campaign strategy Assists in researching new public relations opportunities such as collaborations with campus partners or community members, working with influencers, etc. Provides administrative support QUALIFICATIONS Minimum 3 months of customer service experience required. Minimum 3 months of copy-editing & copy-writing experience required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required Desire to learn about marketing, advertising, and corporate communications Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions Ability to effectively communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing Ability to maintain professional work conduct Ability to make independent decisions and make recommendations Ability to satisfactorily complete a background check (including a criminal records check) EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY Employment with ASI is open to any Cal Poly Pomona student who is eligible to work and has the legal right to work in the United States. In addition, student employees must be currently enrolled in a minimum of 6.0 units (undergraduate) and 4.0 units (graduate), international student employees must be enrolled in a minimum of 12.0 units (undergraduate) and 6.0 units (graduate) at the end of the add-drop period. Student employees are required to have a minimum overall and Cal Poly Pomona GPA of 2.0 and be in good academic standing with the University. Individuals enrolled only in Extended University are not eligible for hire. Exceptions to the unit load requirement are allowed during the summer term and for students who have applied for graduation for the current term.  BACKGROUND CHECK A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can begin employment with Associated Students, Inc., Cal Poly Pomona. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current ASI employees who apply for this position. WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear; manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and verbal communication; use of office equipment: telephones, calculator, copier and fax. Must be able to walk, stand, bend, and lift to 45 pounds.
