FAES | Center for Lake Erie Area Research-JMThe Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab program is seeking a talented student writer to join its communications team and help develop impactful stories about research, education, and outreach programs that protect and improve Ohio's water resources. This hands-on position offers the opportunity to build an impressive professional portfolio while working alongside communicators, researchers, educators, and designers on a wide variety of projects.
As a Student Science Communications Writer, you'll create content that educates and engages audiences. Responsibilities include:
- Writing web stories independently or collaboratively on environmental and Great Lakes-related topics
- Assisting with promotional emails, publications, and marketing materials to recruit students for Stone Lab courses
- Developing educational content for outreach displays on topics such as harmful algal blooms, wetlands, aquaculture, and pharmaceuticals in water
- Collaborating with graphic designers to develop publication layouts and visual communications materials
- Writing news releases highlighting program research, events, and achievements
- Creating short video scripts for researcher spotlight and YouTube summary videos
- Developing brochures, fact sheets, posters, and other outreach publications
- Crafting engaging social media content that showcases research, education, and community impact
- Maintaining media contact lists and publication databases
Additional Information:
This is an excellent opportunity for a student interested in science communications, journalism, marketing, environmental science, or public relations to gain real-world experience and produce a diverse range of professional work samples. You'll leave with an expanded portfolio that demonstrates your ability to write for multiple platforms and audiences while communicating important environmental issues.

Ohio Sea Grant is part The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) School of Environment and Natural Resources, Ohio State University Extension, and NOAA Sea Grant, a network of 34 Sea Grant programs nation-wide dedicated to the protection and sustainable use of marine and Great Lakes resources. Stone Laboratory is Ohio State’s island campus on Lake Erie and is the research, education, and outreach facility of Ohio Sea Grant and part of CFAES School of Environment and Natural Resources.
