The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of UK and EU financial services law, practical experience dealing with the UK Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS), and a background in fintech, payment processing, banking or digital assets.
We are looking for someone who can work independently, handle complex legal and regulatory matters, manage disputes and work directly with financial institutions, regulators and external legal advisers.
Key Responsibilities
1. Regulatory Compliance & Financial Services Law
Ensure compliance with applicable UK, EU, Canadian and UAE financial services regulations.
Maintain strong working knowledge of FCA regulations, UK Payment Services Regulations, EU PSD2, MiCA, GDPR and relevant AML/CFT legislation.
Monitor regulatory developments and implement necessary changes to internal policies and procedures.
Support regulatory applications, licensing requirements, renewals and ongoing compliance obligations, including MSB, RPAA and CASP.

Manage complaints and disputes referred to the UK Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS).
Prepare formal responses, supporting documentation and evidence for FOS investigations.
Handle merchant complaints, contractual disputes, settlement-related disputes and regulatory enquiries.
Manage complaints in accordance with applicable FCA complaint-handling requirements.
Liaise with external solicitors and legal advisers on litigation, claims and dispute resolution.

Identify contractual risks and recommend appropriate protections for the company.
Review banking, acquiring and third-party provider agreements.
Handle contract disputes, termination notices, indemnities and liability-related matters.
Ensure contractual documentation complies with applicable UK and EU laws.
4. AML, KYC & Merchant Compliance
Oversee merchant onboarding, KYB, KYC, enhanced due diligence and sanctions screening.
Review high-risk merchant applications and assess regulatory, financial and reputational risks.
Develop and maintain AML/CFT policies, procedures and internal controls.
Support transaction monitoring, suspicious activity escalation and financial crime investigations.
Ensure appropriate ongoing merchant monitoring and compliance reviews.
5. Banking, Acquiring & Payment Operations
Manage compliance requirements imposed by acquiring banks, payment providers and financial institutions.
Review merchant restrictions, reserve requirements, chargeback exposure and settlement disputes.
Assist with banking compliance reviews, account restrictions and provider-related investigations.
Evaluate regulatory risks relating to cross-border payments, card acquiring, alternative payment methods and digital assets.
6. Risk Management & Regulatory Reporting
Identify, assess and manage legal, operational and regulatory risks.
Prepare regulatory submissions, internal compliance reports and audit documentation.
Maintain compliance registers, risk assessments and regulatory records.
Coordinate internal and external compliance audits.
Work with management to address regulatory and contractual risks.
7. External Legal & Regulatory Relationships
Liaise with regulatory authorities, legal advisers, banks, payment partners and compliance consultants.
Coordinate with external counsel across multiple jurisdictions.
Support international business expansion by reviewing regulatory and legal requirements.
Assist management with legal and compliance decisions affecting business operations.
Essential Requirements
Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in compliance, legal or regulatory roles within fintech, payments, banking or financial services.
Strong practical knowledge of UK and EU financial services law.
Direct experience dealing with the UK Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS), including managing complaints, investigations and formal responses.
Experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating commercial and financial services agreements.
Strong understanding of FCA requirements, PSD2, AML/KYC, sanctions, GDPR and financial crime regulations.
Experience managing contractual disputes, regulatory enquiries and payment-related complaints.
Good understanding of payment processing, merchant acquiring, cross-border payments and financial services operations.
Ability to independently handle legal and compliance matters and work with external legal counsel.

Familiarity with FINTRAC, Canadian RPAA, EU MiCA and international licensing requirements.
Previous experience handling high-risk merchants, chargeback disputes, banking restrictions and payment settlement issues.
Experience supporting regulatory applications and licensing processes across multiple jurisdictions.
Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a commercially minded professional who understands both legal obligations and the practical realities of operating an international payments business.
The successful candidate must be confident managing regulatory issues, commercial agreements, FOS complaints, disputes and compliance matters without requiring constant supervision.
Please note: This is not a purely administrative compliance position. Candidates must have hands-on legal and regulatory experience, particularly with UK and EU financial services law and FOS disputes.
- Applications without the minimum 3 years of relevant experience or direct FOS experience will not be considered.
