Show job description

You will be a critical part of our first-line risk team, aligned to one or more areas within Retail or Group Customer Operations. Working closely with business, change and risk colleagues, you will help teams identify, assess, manage and monitor conduct, regulatory and operational risk in line with Nationwide’s Enterprise Risk Management Framework. You will support the design and operation of robust, effective and efficient controls, help maintain a clear risk profile and provide insight that enables informed decision-making.

Customer outcomes are at the heart of everything we do. You will bring a broad understanding of the financial services regulatory environment and use your judgement and influence to help teams respond effectively to business, regulatory and technology change.

Please note that the Retail and Group Customer Operations Risk team is made up of different level roles and we are currently recruiting for multiple vacancies. There are variations in the level of experience required and in-role responsibilities depending on the role. If you are interested but unsure which role to apply for, feel free to reach out to the Recruiting Manager for an informal chat.

At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.

For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our Swindon, London, Bournemouth, Northampton, Dunfermline, Sheffield, Wakefield, Glasgow or Gosforth office. If you’re based at our Glasgow office, this will apply from 1 April 2027 and ahead of that there will be a need to regularly connect with colleagues for collaboration events. If you are aligned to our Gosforth hub (as this is your nearest location), there will be a need to regularly connect with colleagues for collaboration events. This is anticipated to be weekly in Gosforth. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.

If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can.

What you’ll be doing

You will provide objective advice, actionable insight and constructive challenge for the business area(s) you are aligned to. You’ll support business teams to identify, assess, manage and monitor conduct, regulatory and operational risk and to design, operate and evidence effective and efficient controls.

You will maintain a comprehensive understanding of aligned teams’ risk profiles, identifying emerging risks, control weaknesses and opportunities for improvement. You’ll be working with business and change teams to ensure risks are identified, appropriately mitigated and understood, to enable change initiatives to be implemented safely. You’ll also support regulatory compliance and assess the impact of internal, business and regulatory change on the risk and control environment.

You’ll provide clear reporting and insight through risk governance and transformation activity, as well as in response to ad hoc business needs. You will build trusted relationships across business and risk teams, as well as our colleagues in 2nd and 3rd line.

You will contribute to cross-risk and cross-functional initiatives, sharing knowledge and helping to strengthen risk culture and control effectiveness across Nationwide. You’ll role model collaboration and help colleagues understand priorities, challenges and opportunities, while contributing to an inclusive team culture.

  • Proven facilitation and influencing skills, with consistent decisiveness and sound judgement.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to build effective professional relationships across all levels of an organisation

  • An industry-standard risk management, compliance, technical or professional qualification, or a willingness to work towards one. Alternatively, be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and expertise gained in a relevant industry / profession

Our customer first behaviours put customers and members at the heart of how we work together. They are the set of behaviours that every colleague needs to display, in every role:

  • Say it straight - We are brave in speaking out and saying what we think – we’re honest and direct with good intent, openly sharing diverse perspectives to reach the best conclusions and using language everyone can understand

  • Push for better - We don’t settle for mediocrity, we challenge the status quo, taking responsibility for continuous improvement and personal development

  • Get it done - We prioritise what will have the greatest impact, we are decisive, and we take accountability for delivering brilliant customer outcomes
