About the Project

BSI is seeking an experienced DEI facilitator and consultant in the Flint, Michigan area to lead a diversity, equity, and inclusion training engagement for a county public agency. The project includes in-person awareness training for about 150 participants, including a unionized frontline workforce, managers and supervisors, and elected officials, along with consulting support to help the agency build its own ongoing DEI training program.
You will be the subject-matter expert and lead facilitator. Our in-house learning team will build the training materials under your direction, and a program manager will handle client coordination, scheduling, and logistics.

Training Topics

  • Systemic racism: what it is and how to recognize it
  • Implicit and unconscious bias: how it shows up and how to recognize it
  • How to start undoing bias
  • Communicating in the workplace, including how to have professional, productive conversations about race
  • Microaggressions: how to recognize them and respond
  • Cultural awareness and inclusion

Responsibilities

  • Needs assessment. Conduct on-site interviews and focus groups with HR, union leadership, managers, and frontline staff to understand the organization's culture and training needs.
  • Curriculum direction. Provide content direction, outlines, activities, and realistic workplace scenarios to our learning team, and review all materials for accuracy and appropriateness.
  • Training delivery. Facilitate approximately 8 in-person sessions in June 2027: 2 full-day leadership sessions and 6 half-day frontline sessions of about 20 participants each, held at agency facilities and scheduled around crew shifts.
  • Program development consulting. Develop recommendations and a roadmap to help the agency build and sustain its own DEI training program.
  • Evaluation. Help design pre- and post-training evaluations and contribute to a final summary report.
  • Collaboration. Participate in planning meetings and status check-ins with our program manager and the client.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience designing and facilitating DEI training for adult employees in workplace settings
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating sessions on systemic racism, implicit bias, microaggressions, and conversations about race
  • Experience leading in-person groups, including mandatory training and participants who may be skeptical or resistant
  • Experience conducting organizational needs assessments using interviews, focus groups, and/or surveys
  • Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) Qualified Administrator certification or experience with other validated assessment tools
  • Experience advising organizations on DEI program or strategy development
  • Strong written communication skills for reports and recommendations
  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, organizational development, education, social sciences, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Reside within about 90 minutes of Flint, Michigan, with reliable transportation to sites across Genesee County
  • Availability for multiple weekday sessions in June 2027, including possible early-morning start times
  • 2–3 professional references, including at least one organization where you delivered DEI training
  • Ability to work as an independent contractor and provide an IRS Form W-9

Nice to Have

  • Experience with public-sector, municipal, or government organizations
  • Experience working with unionized workforces or in labor-relations settings
  • Experience with frontline or field-based workforces such as public works, transportation, utilities, construction, or manufacturing
  • Development of training materials, including slide decks, facilitator guides, participant workbooks, and activities
  • Development of eLearning modules, or experience collaborating with instructional designers on online learning (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Rise 360, or similar tools)
  • Professional DEI certification (e.g., Cornell University Diversity and Inclusion certificate or similar)
  • Master's degree in a related field
  • Train-the-trainer experience, preparing internal staff to deliver training
  • Experience measuring training impact and program evaluation
  • Familiarity with Michigan civil rights law (Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act) and EEO requirements
  • Connections to the Flint and Genesee County community
