AECOM is seeking a Control Systems Designer to join our growing Canadian Data Center practice. This role will support the design and delivery of hyperscale, colocation, and other mission-critical facilities across North America. This is a newly created position.

The successful candidate will contribute to the design and integration of resilient automation, monitoring, and control systems while collaborating with experienced multidisciplinary Data Center teams across Canada, the U.S., and globally. This is an opportunity to develop specialized expertise in a rapidly growing sector while working on complex, high-performance facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Design building automation, PLC, SCADA, and Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (PMS/EPMS) for data centers and mission-critical facilities.
  • Develop control sequences, system diagrams, network architectures, points lists, equipment schedules, and technical documentation.
  • Coordinate with mechanical teams to develop controls for HVAC, heat-rejection, hydronic, and related building systems.
  • Coordinate with electrical teams to develop monitoring and control requirements for power distribution and critical electrical infrastructure.
  • Develop Basis of Design documentation and technical specifications for controls, instrumentation, automation, power monitoring, and system integration.
  • Design resilient operational technology networks using Ethernet, fibre, copper, wireless, and serial communications.
  • Apply control-system protocols including BACnet, Modbus, and EtherNet/IP.
  • Coordinate control panels, instrumentation, field devices, structured cabling, and equipment-mounted controls with ICT and other disciplines.
  • Support design criteria addressing reliability, redundancy, resiliency, maintainability, monitoring, alarming, and cybersecurity.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary design reviews, quality reviews, construction-phase services, commissioning, and resolution of technical issues.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation, Instrumentation, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline, or demonstrated equivalency of education and experience.
    • 4+ years of relevant controls, automation, instrumentation, or building-systems design experience.
    • Experience developing control sequences, diagrams, points lists, specifications, or controls-submittal documentation.
    • Experience with building automation systems and PLC platforms.
    • Experience with Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (PMS/EPMS) or integrated building-control systems.
    • Strong communication, collaboration, technical documentation, and problem-solving skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with hyperscale, colocation, mission-critical, healthcare, laboratory, industrial, advanced manufacturing, or other complex facilities.
    • Experience designing controls for data center mechanical and electrical infrastructure.
    • Experience with BAS, PLC, SCADA, PMS/EPMS integration.
    • Knowledge of BACnet, Modbus, EtherNet/IP, and related control-system protocols.
    • Experience designing operational technology networks and coordinating structured-cabling interfaces.
    • Experience developing controls, instrumentation, automation, and cybersecurity specifications.
    • Knowledge of resilient control architectures, redundancy, monitoring, alarming, and system maintainability.
    • Experience supporting controls commissioning, functional performance testing, submittal reviews, or field verification.
    • Relocation is not available for this position.
