Role: Controller
Kupperman Companies is a commercial real estate development and investment firm based in New Orleans, Louisiana, that specializes in acquiring, developing, and investing in commercial real estate assets, with a particular focus on hotels, multi-family, mixed-use, and retail assets.
We are seeking an experienced Controller with a background in Real Estate and Investment/Finance to join our closely held firm. The ideal candidate flourishes in an entrepreneurial and collaborative environment and possesses a high level of initiative and independence in performing the responsibilities of the role to drive results. In addition to traditional controller and bookkeeping responsibilities, the candidate will manage construction draw administration, job cost accounting, and financial reporting for the firm’s active development projects.
Your Mission
You’ll be the company lead for all things bookkeeping, accounting, and financial operations. Your goal is to oversee the day-to-day accounting and financial operations, such as accounts payable and receivable, bank reconciliations, and construction draw and job cost tracking. We want you to run a tight, accurate books-and-reporting operation as we grow.
Job Duties:
Bookkeeping & AP/AR
● Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, and the monthly and annual close process.
● Maintain the company’s books and records, including day-to-day transaction recording, reconciliations, and invoicing.
Construction draws & job cost accounting
● Administer construction loan draw requests, including preparation of sources-and-uses schedules and coordination with lenders and title companies.
● Maintain job cost accounting for active development projects, recording actual costs against budget.
Reporting
● Prepare monthly, quarterly, and ad-hoc financial statements and reports.
Tax & compliance
● Coordinate with tax credit consultants and auditors on compliance filings and cost certifications.
● Support tax filings and manage the annual 1099 process for contractors.
Education & Qualifications
● Fluent in English.
● Attention to detail and adept at problem-solving.
● Customer service oriented.
● Strong verbal and written skills to communicate effectively to internal and external professionals.
● Great attitude, creativity and flexibility on meeting whatever the day brings is a must!
● Relentlessly resourceful.
Experience:
● Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance with CPA preferred.
● Minimum of 8+ years accounting experience.
● Prior experience in real estate industry, private equity, investment banking, or fund management required.
● Solid understanding of real estate and property accounting, partnership tax matters, investments, and real estate development.
● Must be a quick-learner and self-starter.
● Highly motivated and results driven.
● Excellent problem-solving skills.
● Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
