Job Title: Controls Technician Job Description This role focuses on independently troubleshooting, servicing, and commissioning building management systems (BMS) in mission-critical environments. The Controls Technician ensures reliable operation of hardware, software, and networked control systems while executing service tickets and commissioning activities to meet performance and sustainability goals. The position plays a key role in delivering smart, sustainable solutions that improve facility performance, reduce operating costs, and support clients’ long-term operational efficiency. Responsibilities Independently troubleshoot, service, and commission BMS systems in mission-critical environments to ensure reliable and efficient operation. Diagnose and resolve issues related to hardware, software, and networked control systems in a timely and accurate manner. Execute service tickets from assignment through full resolution within established service level agreement (SLA) timelines. Perform system upgrades, including software updates, firmware upgrades, and configuration enhancements as required. Conduct system backups and restores to maintain system integrity and support disaster recovery procedures. Implement configuration changes to optimize system performance and meet client requirements. Execute commissioning and startup activities for new or upgraded systems, including validation of system performance and functionality. Install and configure control system components such as sensors, controllers, and control panels. Read and interpret control drawings, schematics, and documentation to identify issues and implement effective solutions. Collaborate with project teams and field personnel to support active construction and service projects in both office and field environments. Maintain accurate documentation of work performed, system changes, and configurations to support ongoing operations and future troubleshooting. Follow company policies and procedures related to travel, expenses, and field operations while supporting multiple project sites. Essential Skills 3–5+ years of experience in BMS, building automation, or HVAC controls. Proficiency with Tridium Niagara (N4) or equivalent controls systems. Hands-on experience with Tridium Niagara BMS for installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and service. Strong troubleshooting capability across control systems, including hardware, software, and networked systems. Ability to independently diagnose and resolve complex control system issues in mission-critical environments. Ability to read and interpret control drawings, schematics, and technical documentation. Experience installing and configuring control system components such as sensors, controllers, and panels. Ability to execute commissioning, startup, and validation activities for BMS and control systems. Strong organizational skills to manage service tickets from assignment through completion within SLA timelines. Willingness and ability to travel extensively as required by a 100% traveling role. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working in mission-critical environments where system uptime and reliability are essential. Familiarity with building automation systems, HVAC controls, and related mechanical and electrical systems. Comfort working with both hardware and software aspects of control systems, including networked control architectures. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high-quality standards. Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with project teams, field staff, and clients. Adaptability to work across multiple projects and sites, including construction and service environments. Motivation to support sustainable, energy-efficient solutions that reduce operating costs and carbon emissions. Work Environment This position is a 100% traveling role, supporting projects across multiple locations. The work environment is hybrid across office and field settings, with responsibilities spanning active construction sites and ongoing service projects. When not traveling, the technician works from a home office and performs remote tasks as feasible. Travel and expenses follow a defined reimbursement policy for traveling technicians. A company vehicle is not provided; commuting from home to a project within 30 miles is considered standard commute, while mileage reimbursement may be available when traveling to multiple sites in a day or covering significant mileage. The role involves working with building management systems, control hardware, sensors, controllers, panels, and networked control technologies in both indoor and field conditions.
