About Tucuvi
At Tucuvi, we build AI that helps healthcare teams provide timely care to more patients. Our care management platform combines LOLA, our clinical voice agent, with the workflows that connect patient conversations to clinical teams.
As we grow across Europe and the US, we’re looking for someone to lead our conversation designers and forward-deployed conversational AI engineers (FDEs), bringing design and engineering together to make every interaction with LOLA clear, natural and easy to navigate.
About the role
You’ll lead the people and processes behind our AI-powered conversations, managing conversation designers and forward-deployed conversational AI engineers. You’ll bring design judgment and technical fluency together to turn clinical protocols into reliable patient experiences, guiding the team as they design, build, integrate, test and release each protocol.
You've spent years designing conversations and you're good at it. Now you want to lead a team, own its capacity and deadlines, and help others do their best work.
This is a player-coach role. You'll plan and assign the work, keep delivery on track and remove blockers, and you'll know the craft well enough to review a design, jump into a tricky flow, or follow an FDE through a technical problem. You don't need to be an engineer, and you won't own the underlying AI platform. Platform and product engineering own that, and you'll work closely with them.
What you’ll do
👥 Lead and develop the team
Manage and support conversation designers and forward-deployed conversational AI engineers through regular 1:1s, clear expectations, performance reviews and career development.
Coach across both disciplines: help designers strengthen their design judgment and help engineers grow their conversational AI implementation skills.
Give useful, timely feedback, address underperformance and build a culture where people can ask questions and challenge decisions.
Improve onboarding and coaching so people develop sound judgment, technical confidence and shared ownership of the patient experience.
Have a deep understanding of our product so you can tell whether someone is stuck on a design problem, an unclear clinical requirement, or an implementation issue.
💭 Own conversation design quality
Set a high bar for wording, tone, cognitive load and how conversations recover from misunderstandings or unexpected answers.
Establish shared principles, examples and review practices so LOLA’s voice remains consistent across designers and protocols.
Evaluate conversations from the patient’s perspective: did they achieve their goal, understand what happened and know what to do next?
Help the team design for different communication needs, levels of health literacy and familiarity with technology.
Work with designers and FDEs to ensure the implemented experience preserves the intent of the design and works reliably in real patient and clinical workflows.
Measure protocols' quality, so we can have a proactive approach when it comes to protocols' improvements
🔎 Keep delivery moving
Guide the team through discovery, design, implementation, integration, testing, review and release, coordinating the clinical and technical approvals needed to ship safely.
Manage capacity across workstreams, balancing new protocols, improvements to existing conversations and ongoing quality work.
Make priorities, dependencies and trade-offs clear, and work with stakeholders to resolve blockers.
Build repeatable ways of working across design and engineering that support quality, reliable releases and a sustainable delivery pace.
Establish a way for the team to collaborate with other teams to create client demos
Who you’ll work with
You’ll lead conversation designers and forward-deployed conversational AI engineers, and work closely with technical leads, Conversation AI tech lead, product and clinical colleagues. Together, you’ll translate patient needs and clinical requirements into conversations that are understandable, technically sound, reliable and ready for delivery.
🎯 What we’re looking for
Significant experience in conversational AI, conversational design, voice UX or a closely related discipline, with examples of experiences you have designed, implemented, evaluated or improved.
Strong design judgment and exceptional attention to language, interaction patterns and the needs of different users.
Practical engineering experience with AI-powered products: you can understand and discuss code, APIs, integrations, testing and debugging. You do not need to be a platform or infrastructure specialist.
Experience managing and developing people across design and engineering disciplines, including feedback, performance conversations and career growth.
A track record of coordinating cross-functional delivery and managing competing priorities.
Practical familiarity with prompting, conversational AI systems and AI-assisted quality review, including knowing when human review is essential.
The ability to explain both design and technical decisions clearly and turn individual expertise into practices the whole team can use.
You’re not expected to build or own the underlying AI platform, but you should bring enough hands-on engineering experience to credibly guide and coach forward-deployed conversational AI engineers.
➕ It would be a plus if you have
Worked in healthcare or another environment where clarity, trust and careful review are essential.
Designed voice experiences for people with varied accessibility and health-literacy needs.
Built conversation guidelines, review frameworks or onboarding programmes.
Used conversation research, feedback or performance data to improve live experiences.
Your first few months
You’ll get to know the designers and FDEs, our protocols, technical workflows and the patient experience; establish regular 1:1s; and understand how work moves from design through implementation, testing and release.
By the end of your first three months, you’ll have agreed priorities for improvement, clarified team capacity across design and engineering, and introduced initial improvements to design standards, technical practices, feedback or delivery. You’ll also have a baseline for assessing progress in conversation quality, implementation reliability and delivery.
By month 1: Get to know the team and the work
You know every designer and FDE, their strengths, their workload and what slows them down, and weekly 1:1s are in place.
You've followed protocols from brief to release, so you know first-hand where time and quality are lost.
You’ve got your hands dirty, shadowed a designer as they built conversation flows, and followed real conversations through implementation and release.
There's one clear view of who's working on what and by when.
The team already sees you as their first port of call when they're blocked.
By month 3: Get the work flowing
You've agreed improvement priorities with your manager (Director of Engineering) and set a baseline for delivery and quality (for example lead time per protocol, rework, issues found after release).
The team works to deadlines previously agreed, and risks are raised early.
A first version of the brief-to-release workflow is in use, with clear owners, review steps and a definition of done.
You've started raising the bar on quality, with clear, useful feedback on designs and implementations and a first set of shared principles for LOLA's voice.
Everyone on the team has clear expectations and development goals.
By month 6: Own successful delivery
The workflow and design standards are used consistently across all designers and FDEs.
There's noticeably less back-and-forth and rework between design and implementation, measured against your baseline. In other words, there’s few rework after release.
Client-facing teams trust you on what's feasible and by when. When something slips, it's raised early with a plan.
The team runs day to day without you in every decision, and you have a plan for what's next (career paths, hiring, tooling).
People are growing: each person has clear development goals and you've completed a first feedback cycle.
You have a clear view of what the team needs next, whether that's people, skills or tools.
