Meltwater is seeking a commercially minded Corporate Counsel to join our APAC legal team. The ideal candidate is passionate about technology and has a strong foundation in contractual negotiations and privacy law with the ability to manage legal issues in rapidly evolving areas, such as AI. This role will provide practical, business-focused legal support across the company, with a particular focus on SaaS contracting, media monitoring and intelligence products, technology transactions, privacy, data protection and general commercial matters. You will bring exceptional communication skills, a pragmatic approach to problem solving and the ability to thrive in collaborative environments across teams and regions.
The successful candidate will work closely with Sales, Deal Desk, Procurement, Finance, Security, Product, Customer Success and other business teams. You will be expected to manage matters independently, identify legal and commercial risks, and provide clear, pragmatic advice that supports the company’s objectives.
What You'll Do:
Draft, review and negotiate SaaS agreements, master services agreements, order forms, statements of work, data processing agreements, NDAs and other commercial contracts.
Advise on customer, vendor, partner and technology transactions.
Support sales and procurement teams throughout the contracting process, including reviewing deviations from standard terms and proposing appropriate solutions.
Advise on privacy, data protection, confidentiality, information security and use of customer data.
Support the business with contract interpretation, implementation questions, disputes and other day-to-day commercial matters.
Assist with legal issues relating to product development, content, intellectual property, artificial intelligence and digital services, as relevant.
Monitor relevant legal and regulatory developments affecting SaaS, media monitoring, content licensing, privacy, data protection, artificial intelligence and digital services.
Work with internal stakeholders to improve legal processes, templates, playbooks and contract-management practices.
Coordinate with external counsel where specialist advice is required.
Contribute to legal and compliance projects across the Australian and wider Asia-Pacific business.
Help promote a practical, risk-aware and commercially effective approach to legal support.
What You'll Bring:
A Juris Doctor Degree (or equivalent) from an accredited law school.
Active license to practice law
5+ years of post-qualification legal experience, with some in-house experience(preferably technology, SaaS, media monitoring and/or intelligence, publishing, data, or other digital-services business experience).
Excellent negotiation, legal drafting, and communication skills.
Demonstrated experience advising on SaaS contracting issues, including intellectual property, data use, privacy, security, liability, indemnities and termination rights.
Familiarity with media monitoring, content licensing, data licensing or similar content- or rights-based commercial issues.
Demonstrated ability to monitor regulatory and local law developments, identify their practical implications for the business and translate them into clear, actionable guidance.
Ability to work effectively, independently and support the sales team and other internal stakeholders, exercising sound judgement that incorporates strong legal analysis, a pragmatic approach, and consideration of business goals, risk tolerance, and stakeholder priorities.
Ability to balance a high volume of legal matters in a timely and effective manner.
Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to explain legal issues clearly to non-lawyers.
Knowledge and understanding of doing business globally, including working across organizational, functional, and geographic boundaries.
High attention to detail and strong organisational skills.
A team player who values client/customer service and professionalism.
Fluency in both written and verbal business English: ability to dive into conversations and engage across borders!
Whilst you are located in Sydney or Melbourne, you can embrace the best of both worlds with our hybrid work schedule. This role requires you to be in the office on a regular basis to support collaboration and engagement with the broader team. .
Desirable experience
Experience supporting enterprise sales or strategic customer negotiations.
Exposure to international contracting and cross-border data protection issues.
Experience in a global or matrixed organisation.
Familiarity with contract lifecycle management systems and legal operations processes.
Experience advising on technology procurement, information security or artificial intelligence-related matters.
Preferred: Experience advising on the use of content in dashboards, reports, analytics products or client deliverables; exposure to copyright, media, publishing, intellectual property or digital-content regulation.

Managing contracts efficiently while protecting the company’s key legal and commercial interests.
Identifying risks early and escalating matters appropriately.
Building trusted relationships with Sales, Procurement, Product and other business teams.
Contributing to scalable legal processes, templates and contracting guidance.
Demonstrating sound judgment, ownership and a practical understanding of the business.
Reporting line
The Corporate Counsel will report to the Head of Legal for APAC and work as part of the wider global legal team.
