Hi. We’re Hummingbird.
We’re elevating patient access so patients can get healthcare how, when, and where they need it. We partner with healthcare systems to transform how patients access care, enabling their providers to focus on what matters most – caring for patients. By managing patient access as a technology-enabled service, we help health systems stabilize costs and improve patient experience while creating good jobs that attract and retain talent in the industry. Our team of experts is obsessed with the connection between the people, processes, and technology that make healthcare organizations hum. Join us and help build the healthcare experience we want for our communities, our families, and ourselves.
Summary
Responsibilities
About the Role
Keep our technology secure, reliable, and running, and grow into whatever the work needs next.
As a Cybersecurity Engineer at Hummingbird, you’ll build, configure, and maintain the systems, integrations, and infrastructure that keep our environment secure and operational, with a strong focus on security engineering and analysis. You’ll spend most of your day translating requirements into working technical components, troubleshooting issues across systems, working security alerts and vulnerabilities, and building automation that reduces manual effort. You’ll work with growing independence, making sound technical decisions within established standards and knowing when to pull in help.
This is a role for a generalist who likes variety. You won’t be siloed into one narrow area; you’ll wear several hats across security and IT, take ownership of tools and applications in your scope, and have the freedom to spot a gap and build something to fill it. We leverage AI-assisted tools to enhance our capabilities, so comfort using them to build, test, and problem-solve matters as much as any single technology on your resume.
Note on level: We’re posting this role at an intermediate level, and for the right candidate we may consider hiring at a senior level based on demonstrated experience and scope. We reserve the ability to re-level a candidate when their experience warrants it.
What You’ll Do
- Build, configure, and maintain integrations, applications, and system connections across our enterprise environment.
- Take ownership of one or more security tools and applications in your scope, monitoring health and responding to alerts.
- Work through the queue of security alerts and vulnerabilities, investigating issues and routing them to the right next step.
- Build automation around alerting and repetitive security tasks to reduce manual effort for the team.
- Diagnose and resolve issues across configurations, integrations, and incidents, tracing problems to their root cause.
- Serve as a technical point of escalation for the service desk on issues that require deeper expertise.
- Implement security and quality controls, validating configurations against established policies and standards.
- Use AI-assisted tools to implement, test, troubleshoot, and document technical work with meaningful independence.
- Document configurations, automation logic, and dependencies clearly so systems stay understandable and supportable.
- Communicate issues, findings, and resolutions plainly to both technical and non-technical partners.
The Details
- Employment Eligibility: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
- Work Location: Remote. You must work from a location within the United States with consistent Internet service.
- Work Type: Full-time
- Compensation: Expected range is $96,000 - $124,500. New hires usually start between $96,000 - $115,000, depending on experience and internal equity. For the right candidate, we may consider hiring at a senior level, which could adjust the compensation accordingly.
- Benefits: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage; paid time off; 401(k); parental leave; career development support; and more
Required & Desired Skills
What You’ll Bring
- 2+ years of experience delivering scoped technical work in areas such as software engineering, data engineering, information systems, cybersecurity, IT, or a related discipline, or demonstrated readiness.
- Hands-on experience with security tooling such as endpoint/EDR platforms, Zero Trust Architecture, Remote Monitoring and Management, or comparable tools.
- Experience building and maintaining applications, integrations, or automation workflows across a multi-system environment.
- Generalist range and a willingness to work outside your comfort zone, ideally shaped by a smaller team, MSP, or startup environment where you had to do a lot of different things.
- Hands-on experience using AI-assisted tools to build, test, troubleshoot, and iterate on technical work with meaningful independence.
- Working knowledge of security concepts, including access controls, authentication, and compliance frameworks.
- Strong problem-solving, organization, and the ability to work autonomously and juggle multiple priorities without close oversight.
- Clear communication with stakeholders and teammates, including translating technical tradeoffs into plain language.
- Comfort working fully remote, staying self-motivated, and collaborating across a small team and with the service desk.
Nice to Have
- Experience building and managing automations in a security context.
- Experience building safeguards in an evolving AI-centered environment.
- Exposure to scripting languages, API development, CI/CD Pipelines, and/or infrastructure-as-code tools
What Helps You Shine
- Please note that we use both your resume and your written and oral communication throughout the hiring process to understand your fit for this role.
- Thoughtful, clear responses help us see your attention to detail, your professionalism, and your ability to communicate with care, all skills that are essential for success on our team.
Expectations for Focus & Presence
- To support patients and each other, this role requires your full attention during scheduled work hours. Our Outside Employment Policy doesn’t allow overlapping work or “job stacking,” so any outside work must happen fully outside your Hummingbird schedule.
- We’re a camera-ready team, and you’ll need to be on camera during training and when needed during the workday after training ends.
- We value connection, teamwork, and being present, which is what keeps our patients safe and our team supported. If that’s what you’re looking for, you’ll feel at home here. If you’re hoping to hold another job during the same hours, this job won’t be the best match.
Growth at Hummingbird
This role is a key step in our technology and engineering career path. You’ll receive support, coaching, and feedback to build confidence and take on more complex work over time, whether that means deepening your expertise, expanding into new workflows across security and IT, or growing into more senior or specialized roles. At Hummingbird, we believe good jobs should lead somewhere, and that starts here.

Please Note: The seniority level of this position may be adjusted during the recruitment process based on candidate skills and experience.
A Note on Authentic Interviews
We believe the best hiring conversations are real ones. Notes are welcome, and jotting things down during the call is completely fine. What we ask is that you don’t use AI tools or similar assistance to generate your responses in real time. We’re genuinely trying to get to know you: how you think, how you communicate, and what you’ve experienced. That connection matters to us, and it’s hard to find when answers are scripted rather than interactive.
We’re a team that makes healthcare more human. We’d love to meet the person behind your application.
The Hummingbird Approach
We value a team that brings diverse perspectives and experiences to the work we do. While there are many ways to do this, people who are successful at Hummingbird:
