Stanford's Graduate School of Business (GSB) has built a global reputation based on its immersive and innovative management programs. We provide students a transformative leadership experience, pushing the boundaries of knowledge with faculty research, and offering a portfolio of entrepreneurial and non-degree programs that deliver global impact. We invite you to be part of our mission of developing innovative, principled, and insightful leaders who change lives, change organizations, and change the world.
Success at the GSB is defined by The GSB Way - a commitment to shared purpose, community, and excellence in all that we do. We seek individuals who elevate themselves and those around them through the practice of academic candor, generous collaboration, and bringing curiosity and rigor to solving meaningful problems. At the GSB, impact means taking ownership, and contributing to a purpose-driven, collaborative, and high-performing community in service to the institution’s mission.
Stanford Graduate School of Business seeks a Data and Technology Specialist (DTS). The DTS will leverage technology, including enterprise-level LLMs, to scale the GSB External Relations Office’s (ER) programs and strategic initiatives. The DTS also manages, analyzes, and optimizes data systems and technical infrastructure to help ER make secure, well-informed decisions that keep us alumni-centric, data-powered, and aligned across the institution.
This role sits within the Data and Digital Operations (DDO) team, reports to the Director of Data and Digital Operations, and partners closely with colleagues across the department and school leadership.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to shape how External Relations uses data and AI to support Stanford GSB's alumni community, building the infrastructure and automations that free colleagues to focus on relationships, while helping lead the department's adoption of enterprise AI tools. You'll thrive here if you're comfortable with ambiguity, excited to turn loosely defined requests into clear technical solutions, and genuinely enjoy helping others learn new tools. Experience in higher education, nonprofit fundraising, or alumni relations is a plus, as is hands-on experience with enterprise AI platforms like Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini, though a demonstrated ability to learn new technology quickly matters more than prior experience with any one tool.
Duties unique to this position:
- Identify and integrate new data sources, including external platforms and alumni life-transition signals, to support ER's evolving alumni engagement strategy.
- Automate data reconciliation and table-join processes across donor, alumni, and engagement systems, replacing manual spreadsheet-based work.
- Lead the rollout and ongoing adoption of enterprise AI tools (e.g., Claude) across External Relations, including training colleagues and establishing practical guidelines for their use.
- Partner directly with Alumni Relations and Development colleagues to translate evolving needs into technical specifications and deliver reliable resources.
- Validate and quality-check AI-assisted outputs before they reach stakeholders to ensure accuracy and trust in automated work.
This is a hybrid position with the expectation of being onsite a minimum of three days per week. No visa sponsorship available.
The budgeted salary for this position is $136,179 to $165,000 annually.
Core Duties:
Define and drive areas of investigations to assess and produce relevant, standard, or custom information (reports, charts, graphs, and tables) from structured data sources by querying data repositories and generating the associated information, including summary interpretations of results.
Develop and design methods for identifying data patterns and trends in available information sources using a variety of qualitative and quantitative techniques. Proactively suggest areas of investigations.
Design and create meaningful reports that effectively illustrate key findings within the data. Identify and recommend strategic data collection and reporting requirements. Effectively convey findings and recommendations to varied audience groups and senior leadership.
Create non-routine databases and generate related information summaries. Develop innovative algorithms and statistical models to help with finding key insights.
Perform advanced statistical analyses that are appropriate for complex datasets and reporting requirements.
Provide subject matter expertise for ad-hoc projects and inquiries (e.g., requests for statistical analyses or surveys).
Direct and drive the implementation of data standards and common data elements for data collection.
Lead and/or collaborate with technical staff, project teams or vendors to develop standardizing processes and systemize routine reports, dashboards, and metrics.
May lead testing of prototype software and participate in the approval and release process for new software.
May oversee or supervise staff in the development and implementation of programs or functions.
Minimum Education:
Bachelor’s degree.
Minimum Experience:
Five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in a quantitative discipline such as economics, finance, statistics, or engineering.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Advanced experience applying analytical software, database management system software, database reporting software, database user interface and query software, and data mining software.
Advanced ability to collect data using a variety of methods, such as data mining and hardcopy or electronic documentation study, to improve or expand databases.
Advanced experience utilizing complex statistical tools and techniques.
Considerable interpersonal and communication skills to effectively convey findings and recommendations to a wide variety of audiences and influence senior leadership & faculty in key decisions.
Ability to manage multiple activities in a deadline-oriented environment; highly organized, flexible, and rigorous attention to detail.
Ability to use logic to calculate data; efficiently construct a database or scrutinize the form of a question.
Ability to work with data of varying levels of complexity, quality, and validity.
Demonstrated ability to produce data in a clear and understandable manner meeting user requirements.
Effectively manage multiple requests from internal and external customers.
Demonstrated experience in leading projects with users/clients.
