Data Engineer

About the Role

A partner company is seeking a Director of Data Engineering based in Switzerland to build and scale the data foundation that supports critical business decisions. This is a senior leadership role combining data strategy, architecture, engineering management, and hands-on technical involvement.

You’ll own the data roadmap, shape the company-wide data architecture, and establish a trusted single source of truth for core business information. The role involves modernizing legacy data pipelines, strengthening data quality and governance, and improving platform observability and reliability as the business grows.

You’ll also lead a small engineering team, set priorities, and support engineers’ professional development while remaining close to technical decisions. AI will play an important role in the team’s operating model, including opportunities to use AI agents for development, incident investigation, and data quality improvements.

Key Responsibilities

•Own and develop the data engineering roadmap, aligning platform priorities with business needs and long-term growth.

•Define and evolve the data architecture and company-wide data model to create a trusted source of business information.

•Modernize legacy data pipelines and improve the reliability, maintainability, and efficiency of data infrastructure.

•Strengthen data quality, governance, and observability across the data platform.

•Lead and support a small data engineering team, establishing clear priorities and helping engineers develop their skills.

•Balance strategic planning with hands-on technical involvement when complex engineering challenges require it.

•Guide improvements to infrastructure and data warehouse efficiency as the company scales.

•Oversee enterprise system integrations to support consistent, reliable data across business systems.

•Improve platform reliability and establish a durable foundation for enterprise-level data operations.

•Explore and apply AI agents to support software development, incident investigation, and data quality processes.

Leadership & Technical Focus

•Experience providing technical direction and building scalable data engineering capabilities.

•Ability to connect data architecture and platform decisions with business priorities.

•A practical approach to modernizing existing systems while establishing a strong foundation for future growth.

•Ability to lead a small engineering team while remaining engaged with technical implementation and problem-solving.

•Interest in applying AI-assisted workflows to improve engineering productivity and operational effectiveness.
