As Department Manager, you'll be entrusted with leading a talented multidisciplinary team while partnering with regional and national leaders to shape strategy, drive operational excellence, and strengthen Michael Baker's presence throughout Utah. You'll play a pivotal role in advancing our transportation business, supporting key clients including UDOT and local municipalities, and fostering a culture where technical excellence, innovation, and collaboration thrive. What You'll Do: Lead & Inspire Provide leadership, direction, and mentorship to a multidisciplinary transportation team including roadway, drainage, bridge, traffic, and utility professionals. Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement. Support employee development through coaching, mentoring, career planning, performance management, and succession planning initiatives. Recruit, retain, and develop top talent to ensure the continued strength and growth of the department. Drive Strategy & Growth Develop and execute the strategic vision for the Transportation Department in alignment with office, regional, and corporate growth objectives. Identify and pursue opportunities to expand services and strengthen Michael Baker's market presence throughout Utah. Lead business development initiatives, strategic client engagement, pursuit strategies, and growth planning activities. Champion proposal development, interviews, project pursuits, and key client presentations. Strengthen Client Relationships Serve as a trusted advisor to UDOT, counties, municipalities, and other transportation agencies across the region. Build and maintain strong client relationships while identifying opportunities for repeat business and strategic growth. Represent Michael Baker within industry organizations, professional associations, and community events. Deliver Project Excellence Provide executive oversight and guidance for transportation projects to ensure successful delivery, quality outcomes, and client satisfaction. Partner with project managers and technical leaders to maintain schedule, budget, quality, and risk management objectives. Collaborate with regional and national transportation leaders to leverage best practices, resources, and technical expertise. Operational & Financial Leadership Manage department performance, utilization, profitability, staffing, and financial goals. Lead workforce planning and resource management efforts to align staff capabilities with workload demands. Support department forecasting, budgeting, and long-term business planning initiatives. Drive accountability for operational performance while balancing growth, employee engagement, and client service excellence. What You Need to Succeed: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Engineering Management, or a related field. Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Utah required; multi-state licensure preferred. 15+ years of progressive transportation engineering and consulting experience. 10+ years of project management experience delivering transportation projects for UDOT, counties, municipalities, and other public-sector clients. Demonstrated success leading teams, developing staff, and managing multidisciplinary transportation practices. Strong understanding of transportation planning, design, project delivery, and client management within the Utah market. Established relationships with transportation agencies, municipalities, and industry stakeholders throughout Utah. Proven experience leading business development initiatives, client pursuits, proposal efforts, and strategic growth programs. Exceptional leadership, communication, relationship-building, and decision-making skills. Passion for mentoring, developing talent, and building high-performing teams. Compensation: The approximate compensation range for this position is $180,000 - $260,000 per year. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
