POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Globe and Mail is seeking a deputy opinion editor, a management role to help lead the opinion team.
The opinion team, which includes a roster of Canada's leading columnists, assigns and edits thought-provoking columns and essays on a wide range of topics that help Canadians make sense of an increasingly complex world. Working with the opinion editor, the deputy will help manage a group that assigns and shapes breaking commentary pieces, staff columns, and long-form features that consistently rank among the most read by Globe subscribers and are major drivers of new audiences to The Globe.
We are looking for an experienced editor who is as comfortable handling seasoned columnists as first-time contributors. The successful candidate will have a breadth of knowledge about current events and culture, a talent for matching writers best suited to the subject matter, and the ability to lead in a fast-paced environment with a high-performing team.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Help lead and manage the opinion team, including assignments, feedback and professional development
- Generate ideas for coverage and the writers who are best to tackle them
- Guide edits of opinion stories on a variety of topics and in a range of formats
- Guide the production of the daily op-ed page and Saturday Opinion section
- Think beyond standard storytelling formats and participate in Globe subscriber events
- Make sound editorial decisions under deadline pressure while maintaining high journalistic, and ethical standards
- Collaborate with colleagues across the department and wider newsroom on coverage plans
- Use audience data to inform coverage and topic areas
QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least seven years of experience working in an editing role
- Previous experience leading a team
- Prior experience assigning and editing opinion journalism is an asset
- Strong news judgment with a knack for identifying issues that will resonate with Globe readers
- A deep network of possible contributors both in Canada and abroad
This is a management position based in Toronto, and you will be required to come into the office a minimum of three days a week.
APPLICATION: Please include a cover letter with your resume (that is written by you, not AI). Our promise to readers is that the best work comes from our own (human) curiosity and creativity - we’d like to see yours.
SALARY: The base salary for this role ranges from $117,000 to $130,000 per year. Placement within this range depends on a candidate’s level of experience, technical skills, and alignment with the role’s requirements. Candidates who have been identified as meeting the role’s requirements can expect to be near the midpoint of this range, while the upper end is reserved for those with specialized expertise or a strong track record of success in comparable roles. This role may also be eligible for The Globe’s Annual Incentive Plan, which is based on a combination of company and individual performance.
