In this position...
A Static Sealing D&R Engineer at Ford Motor Company designs and launches vehicle body sealing and adhesive systems. They are responsible for injection molded, extruded, and die cut parts that expand when heat activated by paint shop ovens to seal various joints within a sheet metal body as well as the materials and pathing for bulk sealer, adhesive, and other materials applied by dispensing systems in the body/paint shops. Note: A Static Sealing D&R Engineer at Ford is NOT responsible for dynamic sealing such as closures or glass weatherstripping nor are they responsible for glass urethane.
The role combines systems design, supplier leadership, validation, and manufacturing collaboration. A typical Static Sealing D&R Engineer will be responsible for a single vehicle line from initial design through launch with a typical design cycle spanning 2-4 years. During up front design the engineer will utilize proactive efforts to ensure that the vehicle will be water and air-tight under all variation conditions while working with several sheet metal team members, the Body Construction team, Paint team, and program team. During the prototype phase the engineer will validate their design and provide solutions to concerns prior to launch. During launch the engineer will ensure production robustness of the sealing systems and quickly resolve any deficiencies.
The Static Sealing D&R Engineer will ultimately understand the sheet metal structure and assembly processes of a given vehicle line as well as anyone on the team, offering unique and rewarding ownership of the vehicle's delivery.
An ideal candidate for this role is someone who is detail oriented, proactive, tough, and a great communicator. The engineer in this role should enjoy brainstorming and following thru to solve or prevent complex problems with efficient solutions.
What you'll do...
- Understand sealing design to meet vehicle attributes including NVH and corrosion.
- Lead Purchasing and Finance in sealing supplier selection to achieve program targets.
- Develop sealing strategies and designs that meet customer requirements.
- Collaborate with Structures D&R’s and Vehicle Operations manufacturing teams to develop joints and processes that enable efficient and robust sealing.
- Interface with engineers of surrounding components and systems (closures, electrical, trim, etc.).
- Lead full-service sealing supplier in development and delivery of sealing components.
- Kick off injection molded component tooling, manufacturing, layout, and testing.
- Release 3-D CAD that meets system design requirements.
- Lead prototype vehicle level build support for static sealing.
- Support vehicle control plan testing for water and air leaks.
- Deliver Final Engineering Sign-off and production vehicle launch at Ford assembly plants.
You'll have...
Bachelor's degree in engineering.
2+ years of experience with body structures or body exterior with static sealing preferred.
1 year of CAD experience.
Even better, you may have...
Master's degree in engineering.
Recent product development experience with Ford body commodities.
Working level knowledge of Ford’s Global Product Development System.
Knowledge of Ford software systems: AIMS, JIRA, WERS, FEDE, Team Center, Digital Buck, 3DX, and Integrator.
Reviewing and signing off on component drawings.
Leading brainstorming and creating decision matrices to identify optimal solutions.
Applying 8D, fishbone, and other problem-solving methodology to root cause issues.
Applying DMAIC and DFSS principles.
Creating Boundary Diagrams, P-Diagrams, & DFMEA.
Leading design reviews based on Failure Mode Avoidance.
Maintaining DVP&R and signing-off on DV tests – including FMVSS requirements.
Excellent communication skills, including visual.
Strong collaborative, organizational, and visualization skills.
Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote), intermediate skills preferred.
Willingness to support vehicle launches in both US and Canada.

This position is a salary grade 5 and ranges from $65,100-$109,300.
This position is a salary grade 6 and ranges from $74,300-$124,500.
This position is a salary grade 7 and ranges from $86,600-$144,900.
This position is a salary grade 8 and ranges from $99,100-$166,200.
Final determination of salary grade will be based on candidate's skills and experience, and base salary will be set within the applicable range according to job scope, responsibility and competitive market value.
