This role focuses on designing medium to complex mechanical and piping systems for industrial and power generation facilities using 2D and 3D design tools. Working under minimal supervision, the designer develops high-quality drawings and models based on project specifications and engineering direction, ensuring compliance with established design practices, standards, and procedures. The position requires strong knowledge of plant mechanical and piping systems, including the creation of P&IDs, general arrangement drawings, and detailed piping layouts, as well as close collaboration with engineers and other disciplines to deliver accurate and constructible designs.
Responsibilities- Design medium to complex mechanical and piping systems using 2D and 3D design tools in accordance with project specifications and standards.
- Develop piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), general arrangement (GA) drawings, equipment plans, piping orthographic drawings, and piping isometric drawings.
- Interpret and apply project specifications and discipline-specific written and verbal instructions to produce accurate design deliverables.
- Demonstrate a solid understanding of the engineers design development process and incorporate engineering input into design work.
- Design and physically route piping systems, including pipe support design, to ensure safe, efficient, and maintainable layouts.
- Apply sound understanding of pump suction requirements to ensure proper system performance and reliability.
- Incorporate experience with HDPE and underground (U/G) piping into design solutions where applicable.
- Perform design "checking" activities to review and verify the accuracy, completeness, and constructability of mechanical and piping drawings.
- Review vendor and mechanical supplier documents for accuracy, consistency, and alignment with project requirements.
- Utilize vendor documents effectively to inform and refine mechanical and piping designs.
- Support the design of industrial piping systems for air, water, steam, gas compressor, pressurized air, condensate, and balance-of-plant (BOP) systems.
- Coordinate mechanical and piping design activities with other discipline groups to ensure integrated, clash-free designs.
- Use Autodesk Plant 3D and related AutoCAD tools to model piping systems and generate detailed design deliverables.
- Collaborate with project engineers, reporting to the project engineer as needed for technical guidance and design direction.
- Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, quality, and safety in all design activities.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant design experience beyond an associate degree in powerplant piping, electrical, and support design.
- Associate degree in piping design, electrical, or a related technical field, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
- At least 5 years of industrial piping or electrical designer experience.
- Proficiency with Autodesk Plant 3D for both 2D and 3D design and modeling.
- Proficiency with P&ID tools and the ability to develop and interpret piping and instrumentation diagrams.
- Strong understanding of physical piping layout and the practical aspects of physically routing pipe in plant environments.
- Experience with pipe support design for industrial and power generation applications.
- Knowledge of plant mechanical and piping systems, including air, water, steam, gas compressor, pressurized air, condensate, and BOP systems.
- Ability to design piping systems for energy systems, steam equipment, and gas compressor services.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision while producing accurate, high-quality design deliverables.
- Ability to understand and apply engineering design development processes in daily work.
- Strong skills in reading, interpreting, and applying project specifications and engineering instructions.
- Experience using AutoCAD and Autodesk design tools for piping design in industrial or power generation environments.
- Experience with HDPE and underground (U/G) piping design.
- Experience with tapping air and water headers in industrial or power generation facilities.
- Experience performing design "checking" and quality reviews of mechanical and piping drawings.
- Familiarity with power generation facilities and energy systems.
- Ability to effectively review and utilize vendor and mechanical supplier documents.
- Strong coordination skills for working with multidisciplinary engineering and design teams.
- Interest in career growth with potential to move into design supervisor or manager roles as the organization continues to grow.
This position is based on-site at a nuclear generating station, working primarily in an industrial power generation environment. The role follows a standard 40-hour work week, with overtime paid at 1.5 times the regular rate and an emphasis on maintaining a healthy work-life balance. The team typically follows a hybrid-style office presence with three core days identified for office work, though actual in-office attendance may vary, with many team members coming in one to three days per week as project needs dictate. Work involves regular use of Autodesk Plant 3D, AutoCAD, and other design software in an office setting, along with coordination with engineers and other disciplines. The environment includes exposure to typical industrial facility conditions, so appropriate site and safety attire will be required in plant areas in accordance with facility safety standards.
