DevOps Engineer – AWS, Terraform & ECS/Fargate
Work Arrangement: 100% Remote
Employment Type: Full-Time Contractor
Experience Level: Senior
Experience Required: 7+ years in DevOps, SRE, or Platform Engineering
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced DevOps Engineer to design, build, and maintain reliable, secure, and cost-efficient cloud infrastructure supporting high-throughput, low-latency production systems operating 24/7.
The ideal candidate has deep hands-on experience with AWS, ECS/Fargate, Terraform, CI/CD automation, and production infrastructure. This role requires strong ownership, a cost-conscious engineering mindset, and the ability to work independently while collaborating with distributed teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, deploy, and maintain scalable, highly available AWS infrastructure across multiple accounts.
- Optimize AWS costs through resource right-sizing, waste reduction, and cost-aware architectural decisions.
- Manage containerized production workloads using ECS/Fargate, Docker, ECR, ALBs, NLBs, and autoscaling.
- Develop and maintain reusable, versioned Terraform modules and manage infrastructure changes across development, QA, integration, and production environments.
- Build and improve Jenkins CI/CD pipelines, including Groovy shared libraries, Jenkinsfiles, Java/Maven builds, and early-stage security scanning.
- Operate and support streaming, data processing, and caching infrastructure in production environments.
- Implement observability, monitoring, logging, alerting, and incident troubleshooting solutions.
- Develop automation scripts, AWS Lambda functions, and operational tools using Python, boto3, and Bash.
- Strengthen infrastructure security by addressing vulnerabilities, maintaining systems, and managing credentials and API keys securely.
- Create clear, step-by-step runbooks and operational documentation to enable first-level support teams to resolve common issues.
- Manage work through Jira and Confluence, following a pull-request-based workflow with reviewed infrastructure changes.
- Own projects end to end, from architecture and implementation through deployment, documentation, handoff, and ongoing support.
- Use AI-powered development and productivity tools responsibly to improve efficiency without compromising code quality or review standards.
- Communicate proactively, make evidence-based technical decisions, and operate effectively with minimal supervision.
Required Qualifications
- DevOps / SRE / Platform Engineering: 7+ years of experience supporting high-throughput, low-latency production systems with 24/7 availability requirements.
- AWS: Deep hands-on experience across multiple accounts, including VPC, Transit Gateway, Route 53, ACM, CloudFront, IAM, KMS, Secrets Manager, Systems Manager (SSM), and CloudTrail.
- ECS/Fargate & Containerization: Proven production experience with ECS/Fargate at scale, Dockerfiles, base images, ECR, task definitions, ALBs, NLBs, routing rules, target groups, health checks, and autoscaling.
- Terraform: Strong expertise building reusable, versioned modules, managing S3 remote state, pinning versions, and promoting infrastructure changes across environments.
- Jenkins CI/CD: Experience developing Jenkinsfiles and Groovy shared libraries, building Java/Maven microservices, improving pipeline automation, and integrating security scanning.
- Observability: Hands-on experience with monitoring, logging, and alerting tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Graphite, CloudWatch, Fluent Bit, Logstash, and OpenSearch.
- Automation & Scripting: Strong Python (boto3) and Bash skills for infrastructure automation, AWS Lambda, and operational tooling.
- Security & Reliability: A security-first mindset, experience troubleshooting production systems, and a strong focus on availability, vulnerability remediation, and secure credential management.
- Communication & Ownership: Ability to work independently in a remote environment, document technical processes, collaborate through pull requests, and own projects from design to production support.
Additional Technical Experience
Experience with the following technologies and services is highly relevant:
- Streaming & Data Infrastructure: Kafka (MSK), Aerospike, EMR or EMR Serverless, Flink, Airflow, Athena, and S3 Tables.
- AI Productivity Tools: Experience using AI coding assistants and productivity tools while maintaining strong engineering and code review standards.
