Job Description DevOps Specialist – Government of Alberta Location: Edmonton, Alberta Work Arrangement: Primarily Remote – occasional onsite work in Edmonton, up to 15% Contract: Full-Time Positions: 7 Hours: 36.25 hours/week Maximum Rate: $85–$90 CAD/hour Work Eligibility: Work must be performed within Canada Position Overview The Government of Alberta (GoA), through its Digital Design and Delivery (DDD) division, is seeking up to seven DevOps Specialists to support digital transformation, service innovation, and program modernization initiatives across the Government of Alberta. The successful candidates will work as part of cross-functional product and program delivery teams , collaborating with Product Owners, developers, designers, and other technology professionals to deliver secure, reliable, scalable, and high-quality digital services. The DevOps Specialist will focus on automation, CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, production operations, monitoring, security, and continuous delivery while helping delivery teams adopt modern DevOps practices. Key Responsibilities Design and implement automation scripts, tools, and procedures to support deployments, maintenance, and minimize downtime. Support the operation of digital services in production environments. Manage configuration, credentials, and production environments following security and least-privilege practices. Plan and coordinate application maintenance activities. Support database upgrades, migrations, backups, and recoveries . Develop reusable templates and patterns for application deployments and CI/CD pipelines . Automate the provisioning and configuration of development and testing environments. Build monitoring, telemetry, and observability solutions to provide application and infrastructure visibility. Support early and frequent integration, security, system, performance, and load testing . Assist delivery teams with limited-availability releases such as Alpha and Beta launches . Identify and eliminate manual processes through automation and AI-enabled solutions . Troubleshoot infrastructure, application, networking, and deployment issues. Document technical issues, solutions, procedures, and operational processes. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to continuously improve delivery and operational practices. Requirements Mandatory Qualifications Candidates must demonstrate: 3+ years of experience in research, analysis, and problem solving. 3+ years of experience documenting technical issues, solutions, and procedures. 2+ years of experience leveraging Generative AI and agentic tooling , including prompt design, RAG, workflow automation, and critical evaluation of AI-generated outputs. 3+ years of experience using SSH clients and Remote Desktop tools. 3+ years of experience with security practices including secrets management and least-privilege access . 3+ years of experience with cloud platforms such as: AWS – EC2, S3, RDS Microsoft Azure – Azure SQL Database, Blob Storage GCP – BigQuery, Cloud Storage 4+ years of experience using command-line interfaces for command execution and file-system navigation. 1+ year of experience with networking tools such as DNS lookups, traceroute, and load balancing . 4+ years of experience with scripting tools, particularly PowerShell . Preferred Qualifications 2+ years of experience working as a DevOps Specialist supporting continuous delivery of custom-built applications. 2+ years of experience designing and deploying hybrid-cloud applications using Red Hat OpenShift . 2+ years of experience with Infrastructure as Code ( IaC ) tools such as Terraform . 3+ years of experience using VS Code or Visual Studio 2019+ . 3+ years of experience working with CI/CD pipelines within a large-scale enterprise environment . Experience with GitHub Actions and its integration into software delivery workflows. Experience creating and maintaining automated test suites and supporting quality engineering practices. Experience with cloud-native deployment, monitoring, observability, and production support. Each project should clearly describe: Project/assignment overview and the candidate's DevOps responsibilities. Industry/sector, approximate user count, and team size. Specific tools, technologies, and skills used. Experience supporting continuous delivery of custom-built solutions. Experience with: Hybrid cloud and/or Red Hat OpenShift GitHub Actions Infrastructure as Code such as Terraform Building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines All required experience should be clearly documented under the relevant job/project on the resume. Work Arrangement The role is primarily remote , but candidates may be required to attend meetings or work sessions in Edmonton, Alberta, up to 15% based on project requirements. Candidates must perform the work within Canada and must be able to attend Edmonton onsite sessions when required.
