The 3D Modeling Specialist is responsible for creating, maintaining, and supporting digital construction models used for machine control, site positioning, quantity management, survey workflows, and project visualization. This position works closely with customers, project managers, field personnel, and the Digital Construction Services team to develop accurate and constructible digital models that improve project productivity, safety, and quality.

The ideal candidate possesses experience in heavy civil construction, earthmoving operations, grading, utility construction, and digital construction workflows. This individual will serve as a technical resource for customers while supporting the implementation of construction technology solutions and best practices.

The 3D Modeling Specialist reports directly to the Digital Construction Services Manager.

Pay Rate:  $73,411.91 - $100,944.53 Annually 
Pay rate is dependent upon education & experience.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

3D Modeling & Design Development:

  • Create and modify 3D construction models utilizing engineering plans, survey data, specifications, and design documentation.
  • Develop machine control models for earthwork, roadway, utility, mining, and site development projects.
  • Build and manage surfaces, alignments, profiles, corridors, pipe networks, and grading models.
  • Perform quantity calculations, takeoffs, and volume analysis as required.
  • Process and validate design files for deployment to machine control and positioning systems.
  • Maintain organized project files and version control procedures.

Construction Technology Support:

  • Support deployment of machine control and site positioning solutions.
  • Assist customers with model implementation and troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with field personnel to verify model performance and construction accuracy.
  • Help identify and resolve constructability, design, and workflow challenges.
  • Support digital project startup activities and model handoff processes.

Survey & Reality Capture:

  • Process survey data from GNSS, total station, drone, LiDAR, and other field collection methods.
  • Create existing surface models using survey and point cloud data.
  • Extract features and develop digital terrain models from reality capture datasets.
  • Maintain quality and accuracy standards for survey-derived deliverables.
  • Assist with drone and reality capture workflows when required.

Quality Assurance:

  • Conduct quality control reviews on all model deliverables prior to release.
  • Verify model accuracy against design plans, specifications, and project requirements.
  • Identify discrepancies and coordinate corrections with project stakeholders.
  • Maintain documentation of revisions, updates, and project changes.
  • Follow established modeling standards, workflows, and best practices.

Customer & Team Collaboration:

  • Work directly with customers to understand project requirements and expectations.
  • Participate in project kickoff meetings and technical planning sessions.
  • Communicate project status, schedule updates, and technical issues effectively.
  • Collaborate with Digital Construction Services team members to support customer success.
  • Assist with demonstrations, customer training, and technology adoption initiatives.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Surveying, Geomatics, Drafting, Engineering Technology, or related field; equivalent experience will be considered.
  • 3-7 years of experience in 3D modeling, construction technology, survey, VDC, CAD design, or related disciplines.
  • Proficiency with at least one of the following:
    • Trimble Business Center
    • Autodesk Civil 3D
    • AutoCAD
  • Working knowledge of civil construction practices and earthmoving operations.
  • Ability to interpret construction plans, profiles, cross-sections, and specifications.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites as needed.

Preferred:

  • Experience creating machine control models for heavy civil construction projects.
  • Experience with Trimble machine control systems and site positioning technologies.
  • Knowledge of drone mapping, photogrammetry, and LiDAR workflows.
  • Experience processing GNSS and survey data.
  • Familiarity with Autodesk Construction Cloud or similar collaboration platforms.
  • Experience supporting contractors in field construction environments.
