Job Type: Full Time Category: Newsroom Overall Purpose of the Job Lianhe Zaobao（联合早报）is looking for a linguistically gifted and intellectually curious Digital Sub-Editor cum Journalist to join our fast-paced Foreign News desk. This is an unique, hybrid developmental role designed for individuals who possess a sharp eye for detail and a passion for international affairs. We provide a structured environment that serves as a launchpad for your journalism career. You will being by mastering the digital production and sub-editing of global news, before progressively expanding your scope into original news writing, event reporting and on-the-ground foreign coverage. Key Responsibilities Digital Excellence (Immediate) Sub-Editing & Proofreading: Sub-edit international news copy for accuracy, house style, and legal compliance. Enhance headlines and sub-headers for maximum reader impact. CMS & Website Management: Manage content on the zaobao.sg global page, ensuring story layouts are optimized for both mobile and desktop. SEO Strategy: Craft high-engagement, search-optimized headlines that maintain Zaobao’s credibility while expanding its reach . Digital Packaging: Ensure every story includes essential digital elements (visuals, videos and interactive components). Assist in re-editing layouts and uploading multimedia content and curate backgrounder links to provide readers with global context. Journalism & Reporting (Growth Path) Translation & Synthesis: Transcreate English-language wire reports (Reuters, AFP, Bloomberg, etc.) into authoritative, nuanced Chinese news articles for both digital and print platforms. Original Writing: Research and pen analytical pieces on global trends, trade, geopolitics and diplomacy. On-site Reporting: Conduct interviews and take up journalistic assignments when necessary, such as covering local international forums, press conferences, and diplomatic events in Singapore and overseas. Required Qualifications Linguistic Mastery: Effectively bilingual in Chinese and English. You must possess exceptional proficiency in written Chinese and a high level of English-to-Chinese translation skill. This role supports Chinese publication. Education: Degree preferably in Journalism, Chinese Studies, International Relations, Political Science, or related fields. News Sense: A deep-seated curiosity about global geopolitics and strong interest in current affairs. Digital Proficiency: Familiarity with Content Management Systems (CMS) and an understanding of how news travels on Internet and social media (Telegram, Facebook, etc.). Experience Level: We welcome entry-level candidates with a strong portfolio of academic/internship writing, as well as experienced reporters looking to pivot into a premier digital desk. Working Style: Meticulous and highly collaborative. You should be adaptable and resilient, comfortable working independently in a 24/7 news cycle (including flexible shifts such as evenings, weekends and public holidays).
