Job Description
Shape the vehicle before it reaches the road.
At General Motors, world-class vehicle quality begins with the details customers see, feel, and trust: panel fit, functional gaps, structural alignment, assembly consistency, and confidence that every component performs as designed.
We are seeking a motivated Dimensional Systems Engineer to help transform dimensional engineering within our organization. In this role, you will connect product design, manufacturing, suppliers, and vehicle assembly through robust dimensional strategies along with innovative ideas that will help us shape the future.
You will influence complex vehicle programs from advanced development through production by applying the four pillars of dimensional engineering:
- Requirements definition
- Dimensional strategy
- Variation analysis
- GD&T
This is an opportunity to serve as the technical voice that helps define how the vehicle comes together while delivering measurable improvements in fit, function, variation, launch performance, and manufacturing efficiency.
What You'll Do
Dimensional Management
- Lead dimensional integration, technical reviews, risk assessments, and GD&T activities for body structures, exteriors, and closures from concept through launch.
- Define dimensional requirements for purchased components and assemblies and document them in program Statements of Requirements (SORs).
- Develop and coordinate variation and sag analyses using 3DCS, VISVSA, RSS, SimSolid, or comparable tools.
- Support supplier reviews, matching events, gage reviews, vehicle builds, launch activities, and structured issue-resolution events.
- Serve as a GD&T and dimensional-systems subject-matter expert while mentoring engineering, manufacturing, quality, plant, and suppliers.
- Establish and deploy global dimensional standards, strategies, training, best practices, and lessons learned.
- Collaborate with dimensional quality, design release, product design, manufacturing engineering, supplier quality, plant quality, program, and supplier teams to deliver robust dimensional solutions.
Innovation and Digital Transformation
- Explore and apply AI, Python, Vibe Coding and PMI x Parametric Design x Data loop Integration for Body Metrics.
- Develop new methods, processes, and integrations where none currently exist.
- Convert ideas into actionable projects that make dimensional engineering faster and more effective.
- Support the use of AI and digital capabilities to improve dimensional analysis, simulation, decision-making, and process execution.
Warranty, Launch, and Automation Engagement
- Partner with Warranty teams to identify, analyze, and resolve potential dimensional issues and prevent recurrence in future programs.
- Engage with launch teams to lead dimensional issue resolution affecting quality metrics by identifying root causes, contributors, and corrective actions through data-driven analysis.
- Lead automation initiatives by evaluating equipment capability, datum structures, design enablers, process robustness, and potential trade-offs.
- Identify and implement efficient, repeatable, and scalable dimensional processes.
Program Execution
- Coach, guide, and coordinate program execution across internal teams and external resources.
- Lead through influence across Studio, Manufacturing, Design Release, Engineering, Quality, Program, and the supply base.
- Drive alignment, accountability, and timely execution of dimensional deliverables throughout the program lifecycle.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
- Curious, innovative, and continuous-improvement mindset to dimensional engineering.
- 7+ years of experience in dimensional engineering, product design/release, manufacturing engineering, supplier engineering, quality, or metrology.
- Proficiency in GD&T, ASME Y14.5, tolerance allocation, datum structures, and dimensional variation management.
- Experience with body structures, exteriors, closures, complex assemblies, automotive launches, and manufacturing processes.
- Experience with Measurement Systems (CMM, Scanning), MSA and SPC.
- Understanding of system- and subsystem-level dimensional requirements.
- Experience with Unigraphics (UG)/NX PMI and Parametric Design, VISVSA, 3DCS, SimSolid, and Teamcenter Visualization Mockup.
- Demonstrated ability to lead projects, make technical decisions, and influence cross-functional organizations without direct authority.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical information to engineering, manufacturing, quality, program, plant, and supplier teams.
- Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment with changing program priorities.
- Demonstrated curiosity with AI, Python, automation, PolyWorks DataLoop, or PMI integration.
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- DFSS Green Belt certification or equivalent experience applying DFSS methods.
- Understanding of Red X process fundamentals.
- Experience developing or deploying dimensional-system standards, training, global methods, and lessons learned.
- Experience supporting supplier technical reviews, matching events, prototype builds, validation builds, launch activities, and production issue resolution.
- Experience working across global vehicle programs or within a matrixed automotive engineering organization.
Why This Role Matters
You will help prevent variation before it becomes a launch issue, turn complex dimensional data into actionable decisions, strengthen supplier process capability, and help design teams balance performance, manufacturability, and assembly robustness.
Your work will influence vehicle quality long before the customer sees the finished product—helping GM build body structures that are precise by design, repeatable in manufacturing, and exceptional in the hands of the customer.
You will be part of a transformational organization advancing vehicle quality through automation, artificial intelligence, digital engineering, and connected manufacturing and measurement systems.
